What can the Pittsburgh Steelers do to improve, what do they need to work on - defense or offense?

    or changing their offensive coordinator?

After a dismal season 8-8 win - loss, what do you think the Steelers need to do to improve this coming season? You can suggest something else.

I think that there are a few things.  One, is out of their hands.  That is Ben Roethlisberger staying healthy for the whole season.  Another, is they need to turn the ball over less, and force more turnovers.  When you look at what their offense can do if they don't commit turnovers, you would say that it is just fine.  When you look at their defense when it is forcing turnovers, it is great.  Maybe, they need to improve their special teams a little, but I think that they have the right pieces, they are just not performing how they need to, to be a successful team.

I'm not a Steeler fan, but I think its an unfair assessment to say the Steelers need to change anything. They are a perennial powerhouse and are always in the contender conversation. They had major injuries on both sides of the ball, I think the biggest thing for them is to get healthy.

They still need to get better on turnover margin, or even when healthy, they won't be that good.  I am not a Steelers fan either.

I think the turnovers escalated when Big B was hurt and not playing. They need a more dependable receiving corps.

That might be so, even though, in my opinion, they have a pretty decent receiving corps.

I expected a huge year from Wallace, Brown, and Sanders, but they all underachieved, especially with respect to dropped passes and fumbles. Heath Miller had a terrific year, but he had ACL/MCL surgery and who knows when he'll be ready next year.

I didn't know that about Heath Miller.

There were lots of injuries this year like last year. Steelers D is still dependable, but they need a consistent receiving corps and a  good back up to Big Ben.

They need to stop making mistakes, and yes, to have a decent backup quarterback, along with some decent backups in the secondary.

I'm planning on writing a hub on this very subject. Just haven't got around to it yet.

number2son and Alphadogg16 have good answers. The Steelers did have the number one defense in the NFL for the second straight year and 3rd time in the last 6 years. True, they don't take the ball away that much. We got some cornerbacks who can't catch a cold, and the one guy in the secondary who can catch, Troy, didn't play much. The turnovers by the offense at critical times was a much bigger problem.

And Big Ben was never the same after he hurt his throwing shoulder and missed 3 games. He never got back to what he was just before he got hurt.

Any season the Steelers don't make the playoffs is a disappointing one, but I see no reason to hit the panic button.

Yes, you're probably right.  I do think that they need to get better backups, so that when starters get hurt, they still have competent players on the field.

We are going to read that hub. As stable the team like Steelers, I am sure they will find a way to solve the prob offseason.

Probably.  You never know what will happen though.

Both. This year was a tough year for the Steelers. Injuries plagued the team. There is always room for improvement, but this year the defense seemed a bit more weak that normal. The offense always needs work.

Well, the fact is, they turned the ball over a whole lot, and didn't force many turnovers, so right there is a place where they need to improve.  In fact, they were just like the Eagles (my favorite team) in that category, (much to my chagrine).
