Is it possible to consider them top 10 teams to be equal? LoL. There is no front-runner in my mind as this discussion has changed week-to-week throughout the season. I would have a hard time deciding between the Jets, Patriots, Ravens, Steelers, Eagles, Packers, Falcons, and Saints.

Teams with great records (relatively speaking) who I do not believe are on the top tier as the best teams mentioned above, but would make up the second tier are the: Bears, Bucs, Giants, and Colts (only because of numerous injuries).

On a side note, they should blow up the NFC West. That division is atrocious and it is a shame that someone from that division will make the playoffs above another team from the NFC that will likely have at least two more wins.

There definitely is not a clear front runner. Although as always the Pats scare me. I woulda told you the Giants three weeks ago. If Peyton had his full offense and the Colts had all their defensive players they would definitely have a better record. But injuries are part of the game.

Doesn't it seem like the Colts are the most injury-prone team every season? Doesn't it seem like former Defensive Player of the Year Bob Sanders is always out for the season and Dwight Freeney is hurt a lot? Doesn't it seem like 3/4 of their receiving threats go down to injuries for an extended period and they are left with multiple receivers nobody has ever heard of every season? This season is likely worse than ever and last season was really bad. No wonder Peyton Manning has won so many league MVP awards. I think the Colts would be the cream of the crop if they were at least somewhat healthy. Manning needs to stop throwing INT's on potential game-winning drives though. As GREAT as he is, that seems to be a common theme for him for a long time.

The thought was correct, he had a great matchup.  The execution was flawed, and the defender made a great play.

In the NFC, Green Bay is pretty solidly on top of the pile at this point.

In the AFC, the Patriots, Jets, and Steelers all have pretty good claims as the best team.

I'll stick with the Jets as the overall best team in the NFL right now.

Why is no one talking about Atlanta ?

I have been.  I think they are a legitimate SB contender along with Green Bay in the NFC.  I don't think the Pats are.  You can overcome having the league's worst pass defense in the regular season, but not in the playoffs.  The Jets seem to have all the pieces in place.

I like Atlanta, but Green Bay is just a step above the rest in the NFC.

Partiots are clearly the best to me... and with their coaching and super bowl experience, they will be hard to beat in the playoffs.

Atlanta is unproven. I guess that's why they don't get too much credit. People aren't quite sure what to think of them, plus in the NFC seems like there is a new top team each week.

I don't get how the Eagles and Giants are not on the same tier. They were one play away from winning against the Eagles? If they won, would the Eagles not be in the same tier as the Giants? I don't get it? The Eagles could have easily lost that game, so to say they aren't on the same tier is beyond me.

The Giants and Eagles were pretty much the two best teams in the NFC. And they both played great last night.

Anything could happen in the NFC. Green Bay may be the favorite in the NFC north, but their defense is not as good as the Bears. If the Bears defense can continue have a stellar rest of the year, and if the offense picks it up they can easily be a contender as well.

Atlanta is top 5 in scoring points and they have a solid defense. They aren't talked about, because they are in Atlanta. There has to be a *star* on the team before they are good. Not that Matt Ryan isn't already, but he doesn't get the press that the other QBs get.

The Minnesota Vikings have been one play away from winning in 5 of their 7 losses. Does that mean they're on the top tier?

      1. Mikeydoes profile image43
Mikeydoesposted 13 years agoin reply to this

I don't know how someone like me doesn't get mad over a post like this. Because it is ludicrous. The Vikings don't even have their coach any more, so please don't say anything like that again. Trolling is stupid.

Green Bay, Giants and Eagles are in the same tier. It is hard to say they are not. The Giants KILLED and dominated a healthy Chicago team, who has the same record as Green Bay.

Giants and Eagles = 1 possession game, and the score would have kept switching, there was no dominant team.

Green Bay a lesser/or equal team just killed the Vikings 31-3. The Vikings were certainly in that tier, but they proved everyone wrong again and again.

I would say Buffalo is a good team, just like the Vikings, they lose a lot of close games. What does that mean? They are a good team and will always give other teams a run for their money. Sorry for them you can't say they are a great team. Record and overall performance alike.

        1. LakeShow T profile image72
LakeShow Tposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Yeah, that's fine. You were merely disagreeing with my initial post where I left the Giants out of my top tier of teams in the NFC. There's no problem with that. My response in regard to the close games the Vikings have been in was my way of articulating that losing close games is fairly irrelevant in my book.  In fact, I was not even considering the Eagles/Giants game at all in my analysis of my top teams. I just think that game-planning against teams like the Eagles, Packers, and Saints is going to be more difficult than planning for a game against the Giants. I don't really care about how close previous games were or how much the Giants dominated the Bears. Almost all teams go through peaks and valleys throughout the season. What matters is who is peaking come playoff time. The teams I mentioned herein are the ones I think will be at the top of the NFC when all is said and done. Someone is going to have to miss the playoffs. My personal opinion is that team will end up being the Giants. I'm not sure where the "trolling" reference comes in to play, but I guess we all have different ways of voicing our opinions and manners in which we respond to those who disagree with those opinions.

          1. Mikeydoes profile image43
Mikeydoesposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Close games are very relevant, if you put yourself in position to win the game at the end, it matters. BIG TIME, especially if you have a QB that is a master of the 2 minute drill. (Eli over Vick 10 times out of 10 in this category) He has 16 wins, luckily the game was close, otherwise they wouldn't have had a chance.......

Also O-Lines and D-Lines are extremely important. Probably the biggest factors in the outcome of every game. Can the D-Line dominate the O-line? If so your team will lose, especially with an average defense.

The Eagles defense is average and will always play that way, and the offense will be average at times.

The Giants defense can dominate a game.

That will be the demise of the Eagles. You can't rely on the QB to put up big numbers every game. Not with an average O-line and an average defense, sorry.

            Good story though.

Brett Favre has 43 game winning drives, why because the game was a 1 possession game. If close games don't matter, I don't want to watch football. What if he never came back on any of those games, could have easily happened.

I'm wasn't disagreeing with anyone's list, I said there is no way you can say that the Eagles are a better team than the Giants, not after the game they just played. They are on the same tier, is it the same as the elite teams? That I am not sure about, they are playing NFC teams for the most part.

The AFC has the big dogs with great defenses.

Althougth I am an Eagles fan, I think the underrated Saints haven't been talked about much. I'm sure they would like to keep it that way. With Reggie Bush coming back soon I think they will be the team to beat again in the NFC. Although Atlanta and the Eagles might be the only team that can keep up with the Saints and their high scoring offense.

Right now I would put the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Pirates at the top in the AFC.

I would put the Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Falcons at the top of the NFC. It should be a great matchup when they play each other in Week 12 with a slight advantage to ATL at home. Although, as a GB fan, I'm definitely rooting for the Pack.

Philadelphia vs. Chicago should also be a great Week 12 matchup in the NFC.

I'm curious to see if San Diego can pull out their late season magic again and make it to the playoffs on a roll. No one is better at the QB position right now than Phillip Rivers, in my opinion.

I think the Eagles would've beaten the Packers if Vick had played the entire game. With his 2nd half performance in that game it was clear that he should've been the starter instead of Kolb. With Packers playing hurt and managing to win games I would be curious to see if they can go deep in the playoffs without a run game.

One thing is sure: who ever we agree is the top team, they will surely lose this week. Nobody wants to be named top dog this season.

Green Bay didn't have a great game today, but a lot of that had to do with Atlanta's defense. They look to be the top dogs in the NFC right now. Rushing might be the Falcons edge right now.

The Eagles, Bears, and Saints are all a step back, but any one of them could close the gap by the end of the season. The Giants look like they are heading into their annual fade.

    1. wavegirl22 profile image42

The Giants annual fade.? Did I see a different game than what I think I saw? The same Giants that today held the Jags to three points, 92 yards in total offense and forced two turnovers?

I think I saw the Giants finally come to play after they ceased the two-game slide and they did end the very hot Jaguars' three-game winning streak.

And then there are the Eagles who may have stomped the Giants lights out last week  .. talk about annual fade!

As they say .....only in the NFL kids. . only in the NFL!

You saw a game that they barely won against the Jags, one of the worst teams in the league.

And the Eagles generally get better as the season progresses.

        You're right about the Jets.

I think the Altanta Falcons are the real deal.  They have a good defense, great offense, a top young QB in Matt Ryan.  They had a big win over the Packers today.  In the AFC, it is hard to say. The Patriots look good as do the Jets, Ravens, and Steelers.  Beware of San Diego, they are having a late season charge again.
