What is Steampunk ?

Steampunk is a sub-culture involving modern/futuristic technology set in an industrialized Victorian time frame, and using the powering technologies of that era, namely steam.

Huh ?!!?

Well, the uncomplicated definition of Steampunk is what happened when Goths discovered the color brown. No, really ! I think steampunk is a lot like Goth, in that it has its own fashion, music, fiction, games, cliques and clubs. It is the meshing of Victorian high fashion with gears, goggles, brass and wood. Picture the Nautilus from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Futuristic technology presented with gorgeous Victorian style. It is ornate, intricate and filled with movement. It says that items can and should be beautiful as well as useful. That's Steampunk.

This genre is great for decorating your home, as well as a great style for clothing and costumes. I am slowly changing my den and laundry room into this motif and I get so many compliments! People always remark about how unique and different it is. Men especially seem to love it. I have brought together some of the best of steampunk, below, some of the items I have purchased myself and can recommend. Have a look, I know you will find something you will love.

1. You can make Steampunk your personal clothing and jewelry choice on a daily basis or even just for clubbing and partying.

3. You can make Steampunk your choice for crafting items. This would be fun for both yourself and also to sell, as Steampunk is very popular.

4. You could make Steampunk your favored genre to write stories or articles. Lots of sci fi ezines are looking for good Steampunk stories and articles to put in their mags.

5. You could make Steampunk your style in painting or graphical artistry.

6. You could make Steampunk your style at the next Sci Fi Convention you attend. Steampunkers always get a lot of attention at conventions.

I think goggles are one of the coolest accessories of Steampunk. I love them around the band of the tophat, or on the top of a leather aviator cap. They also look great hanging around your neck, or even hanging off your belt.

A few of these canes in a brass holder would look awesome in a steampunk decorated room. Add a couple carved handled umbrellas and you have a unique and punky accent!

I love this art! I have a piece of this hanging in my laundry room, that I am slowly turning more steampunk. It's hanging over my ironing board. It looks great!

I bought the first clock below for my den. It looks excellent over my brown leather couch, with a black metal shelf under it. It has just the right amount of masculinity and funkiness to fit in great with the overall decor of the room. I love it!
