Yes, socks soak wet and protect the feet from direct contact with the shoe's leather. When the weather is cold socks give the feet warmth.
I say if you do not want to wear socks, you don't have to wear socks. Plenty of people go sockless everyday and the live full lives. Also, dress shoes and sandals look much better without socks.
Socks aren't a must if you subscribe to flip flops on a daily basis or for some God-awful reason wear Crocs. But if you're in cold and inclement weather, i'd recommend them with shoes for warmth purposes and while you work out for a lack of odor purpose.

No. I seem to have very weak ankles. Have broken an ankle bone at least once, torn ligaments and had bad sprains-- even when wearing sensible shoes. At this point in my life, I wouldn't dare.
