SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation.

The job of this person is to ensure the right keywords appear in the website text so that search engines will find the site and place it on its search pages, hopefully at the top.

nick b theres lots more to seo than that not only is their the keywords but ensuring a good amount of in and outbound links and submitting you sites to the search engines. I can't explain it but seo plays a key role. you need good content but seo is what gets your main traffic. Although you can send a email to all of your 250 friends on facebook well that's not targeted traffic. People are going to use search engines to look for a particular keyword which your site may have visit your site. This will make your chance higher to keep the traffic instead of your friends who might not be interested in your niche/topic

Basically the main purpose of SEO is to put your website in the top ranks of the search engines. They are the one responsible for it.

SEO stands for Seach Engine Optimization which is basically optimizing your site to appear higher in search engine rankings.

In terms of popularization of a website, I suppose the higher you rank in the search engines the more people would find your site and the more popular you should become because you are getting more visits due to higher search engine rankings as opposed to not performing seo. Hope I Helped!
