If you are using Windows then Microsoft security essentials does the job. Also, it is free.
I recently wrote a hub about my personal favorite. 3rd parties have shown it to be the fastest anti-virus as well as the one with the fewest false positives (legitimate programs mistaken for viruses).
ESET NOD32 & ESET Smart Security.
I would also like to second ESET Nod Anti-virus. It doesn't hog your system resources and catches many virus's that others don't. I've been using it for 3 years now.
Avira anti virus personal is the powerful anti virus.
