What software to use when you are not sure if you want to write an ebook or a print book?

I am planning to finally finish my stories. I don't want a software that is overly excessive, yet, helpful in organizing your story and keeping track of events etc. But I am not sure yet, if I want to get it published the traditional way or self-publish via an ebook. If you have any suggestions I am happy to hear your insight. Is there a software that works both ways or would I need two separate software programs? And if you can recommend any I'd appreciate it greatly.

re: which way to publish.  I just wrote a hub on publishing children's books, BUT it has some ideas for you on publishing with Kindle, Nook, vs traditionally, etc.  You really don't need any software to publish an e-book, and of course, just your computer to print out your manuscripts for submission. You could use a spread sheet if you need to keep events in order.  You might want to go to writersdigest.com  I respect that site very much.
