I actually have done quite well with eLance, but I just don't have the time to commit to most projects. When I bid on jobs, I try to take ones that are for a set number of articles and not ongoing. They pay quickly though and I like the format of how everything works.

    Adamowen,
I have personally used Elance for several jobs.  You can get some kinds of things done pretty cheaply - but beware - you often get what you pay for.  It is tempting to grab at that really low bid.  But you will often be unsatisfied with the results.  Be careful.  Use highly recommended contractors.  Expect to pay a fair price.  It can be very convenient.  I really love the concept.  One quick tip:  Be as specific as you possibly when you post a job.  I mean VERY specific.  Vague job posts will cause headaches.  It wastes your time and is unfair to contractors also.  Best wishes!

I have written some advice on this subject:

Don't go for the lowest bid or don't go for highest bid. Start with small jobs and build the confidence. Then start giving the big job. Rate wise i believe pay bit higher for the right candidate.

Yes, I have used elance and like it.   I would recommend elance as well as guru.com.  I've only used the "free version" of both sites.

I have ongoing projects going on and so far so good. Some of the people posting jobs can be quite picky but it is a good thing as they select the best writers focusing on their areas of strength.

I have had great success with the site and will continue to work with them. Elance is my favourite freelancing job site. I recommend them any day.
