Wyoming or Nebraska would be the top 2. Alaska would not be a bad choice as well.

I never realised this was allowed or not allowed in certain states. Interesting. Sounds like the NE and WY ideas make sense. You would certainly need an area where you could attain a decent amount of land, assuming you plan to grow/raise a lot of your own food, so those states seem sensible. I live in MA and there has been a big push toward solar energy in my town lately. We've gotten calls from the town about it, there's been public meetings hosted, and the town hall lawn is covered in Solarize Mass signs.
