Have we become too dependent on technology, and how can we prevent loss or damage to tech?

What would happened if we lost all power and were not able to use all the wonderful electronic stuff and gadgets that many of us take for granted? It happened to me recently and I realized how exposed we are to many natural and human made disasters which can easily destroy the modern world we live in. Should we start planning ahead for  disasters which could wipe out the power grid, and change our lives for a long period of time, or is it better to just hope for the best?
We have come to rely on and trust technology so much that I think we would be lost without it

Too dependent? I don't believe so. Too complacent about our addiction to dwindling sources of fossil fuels to power technology is nearer the present state. We are tool users, and we always will be. Our intelligence and use of tools evolved together over the past 3 million years. However, if we do not get a handle on our impact on Earth resulting from our use of technology, we will be the first species on Earth to bring about its own extinction.

Thanks for your reply Jim. How would you manage without modern communications systems, power and computer technology?

Man has never lost a technological advance since emerging from the Dark Ages. We know too many ways to generate electricity to totally lose power. The threat is that we will make our world uninhabitable for humans.

You are right. I get so helpless when there is a power outage. But having said that, the alternative is to live close to nature, perhaps in the jungle, but I am not prepared to do that. So I will just hope for the best.

I believe we are.  I just finished a book called No Light by Terri Blackstock.  The world loses it's power when a Solar Storm hits the earth and everything stops working and this included electronics, cell phones and even cars.  People are so dependent of technology that many of them are unable to survive because they are not prepared.  Usually they relied on fast and frozen foods.

Hi - I am going to get that book. Personally I now honestly believe we would find it difficult to manage without our technology.
