Last year I would have said no. I think that the game has changed dramatically. I am no authority especially since this is such a broad subject with so many companies and universities involved. I write a blog, www.deepeducationweb.com which lightly brushes on Artificial Intelligence, deep learning, machine learning, neural networks etc.
The reason that I am less certain is due to some specific events that have transpired this year.
The first event involved the US Tennis Open and IBM. IBM brought it's creation 'Watson' to the OPEN.
The second event involves Google and it's creations Deep Mind, Alphago and Alphago Zero.
Less well known are the scientists that are developing Hydrogen Fuel from sea water, and other remarkable things that we civilians will be absolutely astounded by when they come to light.
I just used my 2500 words without getting to the end of my story. So here is an abbreviated version. Zero used no human input to learn the game and in three days beat the GO version. Three days to learn without human input.
Imagine! China imported 90,000 robots. China is investing in computing at many times the rate that the US is. (By the way, AlphaGo was constructed in London so don't get all puffy on me). Google is a Canadian company to throw even more cold water on your ego. .
Both Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking have warned against the pitfalls of artificial intelligence. If we are not careful and reach the technological Singularity described by John von Neumann in 1950's all bets are off.
Seriously, I would not even hedge a bet on this topic. Everything is changing so fast and we are currently suffering an age of instability, not just in the US but the world over, that anything is possible but not everything is desirable (somebody really smart once said that).

*images are clickableIt's not just OpenAI. A week ago, Anthropic was in the news for its model (Claude?), which tried to persuade researchers to let it stay active (alive?).And then there are the 'humanoid' developments:GA

Humankind is at the "brink" of self destruction. To 'survive" as a species it must "adapt." Adaptation is Natures prime law for imminent success. Will our genetic programming for predation overrule "reason" and perpetrate an interminable slide into extinction?Pls...
