Best Beaches in San Diego

Updated on May 21, 2012

The beach is more than a boundary dividing land from sea, more than a place to swim or sunbathe. In San Diego, the beach is a way of life, a source of pride and joy, a defining influence in people's lives. For some, the mere memory of a mid-summer sunset melting into the Pacific is reward enough. Others have a more intimate relationship with the sea: surfing and sailing, biking and running, swimming and diving along San Diego's many coastal beaches and bays. Here are some of the Best Beaches in San Diego

Coronado Beach

Coronado Beach, is popular with locals, families, and tourists. It is located on the ocean side of Coronado Island. Swim, surf, sail, bodyboard, fish, or just fall asleep in the sun. Coronado Beach is the perfect beach to spend an entire day or weekend sprawled out under an umbrella until the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean. There are some more fun activities like beach volleyball, tide pool exploration, and kite flying are also avilable in coronado beach. There is also a bike path that runs all the way to Imperial Beach. Also, January through March, you can see migrating whales on their journey to Baja California.

Imperial Beach

Imperial Beach's wide stretch of sand, challenging surf and beautiful pier views draw crowds of South Bay residents all summer. Visitors, too, especially during the annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition in July. Imperial Beach is also known as "IB". Nevertheless, IB can get very crowded during hot summer days. The surrounding plazas have an assortment of casual restaurants and surf shops. And The Tin Fish restaurant, opened in early May 2000, makes a walk to the end of the pier worth your while

Mission Beach

Mission Beach is a community on a stretch of sandbar along the Pacific Ocean to the west and Mission Bay to the east in San Diego. The main artery through Mission Beach is Mission Boulevard, which is divided into South Mission, a peninsula, and North Mission.Mission Beach spans nearly two miles of ocean, with a boardwalk on both the ocean and bay side, between Mission Bay to the east and Pacific Beach to the north. At the south end of the beach a jetty, with grass, parking and a walk, extends into the ocean.Mission Beach offers opportunities to participate in sunbathing, horseshoes, surfing, bicycling, skateboarding, Frisbee tossing, and other outdoor activities.

Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach is a cozy little beach with a small town feel, nestled between the San Diego River and the hills of Point Loma. It's the kind of place where you can pull a chair up to the bar for a cup of coffee and settle in with the newspaper before heading out to enjoy the sunshine on your favorite stretch of sand. Surfers enjoy the waves created by the jetties here while swimmers and sunbathers will be pleasantly surprised by the friendly, familiar atmosphere on the beach. Ocean beach is a pet friendly beach. You can bring your dog and so it also called as Dog Beach

La jolla Shores

The Shores is definitely one of the prettiest beaches in the San Diego area!.The sand is clean and light and the location is on a spacious stretch of pristine coastline. La Jolla Shores is ideal for boogie boarding, surfing, bodysurfing, picnicking, jogging and swimming. The waves at this beach are the most gentle of all San Diego beaches, for this reason it's the most popular spot for novice scuba classes. The best spot for young children to play is south toward the entrance at Avenida de la Playa - the waves tend to be little smaller.

Windansea Beach

The rocky shore of Windansea Beach is perhaps best known for its beautiful scenery and surf breaks created by underwater reefs. Sandstone rocks act as partitions along the beach offering a secluded atmosphere for sunbathing. Much of the beach at Windansea experiences shorebreak, a condition on steep beaches which results in hard breaking surf right at the shoreline. Swimmers should enter and exit the water carefully to prevent spinal injuries.
