Tips on How to Get Best Deals on Travel Insurance

Updated on August 29, 2012

We need to get a travel insurance when we travel for safety precautions and to avoid worrying while we should be busy relaxing and enjoying.

What is a travel insurance? It is the insurance needed to cover some basic financial and medical and other losses incurred when we are traveling. You can avail of insurance whether you are traveling whether domestic or international.

There are many kinds of travelers: businessmen, students, leisure (includes cruise or just a adventure). To avoid worrying about some circumstances which may happen when you are in a far away place it is better to be careful and to be covered than to be sorry later on. We never know if there are mishaps or accident that will happen to you when you travel. The money is really worth it anyway. When you don’t have insurance when you travel it is like not having a car insurance and you are putting yourself to risky situations. Some embassy wont provide visa for those who don’t have travel insurance along with your preliminary bookings on airfare.

Traveling for some of us is an anticipated activity. Whether you buy your ticket online including the travel insurance or you have a travel agent it is a must that you know what are the basic of getting a travel insurance.

Here are some things which are included in travel insurance:

I remember one time when I attended a conference in France and I was with a woman who brought her child with her, the woman met an accident (got hit by a passing car), then she was hospitalized and the good thing is that the woman have a gold card credit card, otherwise she will never pay the hospitalization bills incurred. She needed to wait for the settlement from the insurer of the person who is driving the car which bumped her, and then that’s the only time, that she can get her money back from her insurer. It is a good thing she has travel insurance but not quite as good because she needs to wait for how long we don’t know. You see that’s the lesson learned, we need to be sure and read the details about the terms and condition of the contract pertaining to the insurance.

  • Bills incurred in hospitals or check up. This includes when you are not feeling well, you contracted an illness or for basic check ups. Included are emergency cases.
  • Emergency evacuation/repatriation The process of returning a person back to one's place of origin or citizenship.
  • Funeral expenses when you are in other places is expensive and you need coverage for this one
  • Trip cancellation. Sometimes trips can be canceled and delayed and this should be covered
  • Death, injury or disability
  • Sometimes you never know if you are going to lose some important documents like baggage, passport, visa etc.
  • At times also your baggage is delayed, you arrived first and your things/stuff are nowhere to be found. Usually airline provides hotel accommodation and emergency money for clothes or for basic needs, but you still need insurance because this is easier to follow up later on when you go back to your country or place.
  • If you get in trouble while traveling, you might need lawyer and you can also include this in your coverage as well

Where to get travel insurance online : Site

You can avail of this insurance through your travel agents or talk to an agent in the insurance company itself. You can also get it from those who have a company specializing in tours and travel. You can also search the internet for cheap and then compare rates. I recommend squaremouth to get a rate. I use it when I travel abroad.

What are the necessary things you should know about travel insurance?

  • You should know whether your medical insurance in your country also cover you when you travel abroad. So if you must travel a lot, just get a medical insurance that covers when you also go for abroad, you never really know what’s going to happen to you! Some countries require vaccination before going there so you need to clarify to your insurer if these are included.
  • Make sure about emergency treatment, how much is the minimum and maximum coverage. Also check coverage for existing medical condition, you can ask your insurer if they can insure you for that, like allergies etc. You might be hospitalized when you are in another place because of pre-existing conditions.
  • You might want to get insured if you are going to a place and indulge in risky sports activities like snowboarding, skiing or skydiving and water scuba diving too.
  • Arrange also insurance for funeral expenses, taking into consideration form funeral parlor and transit to your area of origin. This is something eerie but we really need one just to be sure.
  • Some insurance companies also provide for and security in some risky place in which the embassy gives warning to foreigners.
