How do you get groceries if you only own a bike?

Do you have a basket for your bike? Do you leave the bike at home and walk to the grocery store, carrying everything back? Do you buy only small amounts to bring back? How do you do it?

I have a basket on my bike. Plus I use the handle bars to hang bags off of and I use the store reusable bags as a backpack the handles are big enough to get my arms through.

You can get a bike rack that goes over your back wheel, and secure a few bags to that using an elastic net or straps.  Panniers (saddle bags) are also available, and they fit on either side of the back wheel.  There are also carts specially made for hauling things behind bicycles.  This would be ideal if buying lots of groceries!

You could always take a back pack with you and put your groceries in it.  You may not be able to buy a lot of groceries though.

When my daughter used to depend on a bike for transport (just a year ago) she had a small wire 'trailer' sort of like the little basket carts you can pull behind you with laundry or groceries in them, but it could be hitched to her bicycle.

There is a wide selection of trailers available to hitch to your bike.  Some of them are enclosed and helpful in rainy weather.  Just go to Google images and type in bicycle trailers to see a selection of them.

You can also get sidecars that are useful for carrying objects as well as people (children).  You can see them on Google Images too.  Just type in bicycle sidecar.

We used to have a man in our town that used only his bicycle and he had a small little trailer he pulled behind him.  It was built for pulling a child along but he had modified it and his dog rode in it and also he put his groceries in it.  Clever--I have to use a car or go hungry I'm afraid, I'm a long way from town.

Well, this is exactly my situation. We only own one bike and no car. There is a basket on my bike so if I shop for groceries, everything goes in there. Unfortunately, the basket is not very big.
Luckily, there is a once a week grocery delivery service here and also there is a guy who sells fruits and vegetables out of his truck three times a week; he's located only 5 min walk from where we live.

Grocery shopping can be a challenge when you leave your car, your bike or your bus pass behind and start to depend on your two hands and your own two feet.  Here are a few tips to make groceries shopping easier and safer without spending lots of money. read more
