I just got the news today, I will be in Chile near Santiago for at least a month, though there may be an option to stay longer.  So anyone got any advice for me?

Yes, if you visit santiago make sure you take the Teleferico, its a type of Gondola that traverses part of the city, its beautiful.

if you'll be there for a month, hopefully you'll have a bit of time on your hands.  the central valley south of santiago is nice.  you might also think about a drive over to the coast to check out isla negra.  a stay at la candela there will rank high on my return.  it is a bit worn around the edges, but the hotel is quiet, there's always a fire in the fireplace, and the service is exceptional.  since you're here on hp, you likely enjoy the written word, so a visit to the neruda museum is in order.  of all the travel books i have on chile, fodo'rs was the one that actually made the trip with me. have fun!  and don't forget the piscos!!
