Can anyone answer the following question regarding the New York Police & Fire Departments?

Why do the New York Police Department have NYPD on the back of their jackets whilst the New York Fire Department have FDNY ?

The legal name of the fire department was originally "Fire Department, City of New York." This is where the FDNY came from and has just stayed even though now it is known as the New York City Fire Department.

Many thanks, I thought it was something as simple as that, I did think it was solely because it was more distinctive having the fire dept logo reversed because on a creased jacket NYPD could be mistaken for NYFD, but you answered my question.
