I've left the country but fortunately never had any incidents.
I cross the border dozens of times a year and , so far, there have never been any serious incidents. Familiarity and recognition with the border guards helps. They get use to seeing me or my vehicle on a regular basis and on the Canadian side wave me through and on the US side quickly check my passport and then wave me through. One thing I have learned from years of crossing the border is never take anything for granted. Be respectful and answer all questions honestly.
I *almost* got mugged in London while walking (alone - big mistake) from Baker Street Station to an evening performance of "Midsummer Night's Dream" in Regent's Park after being followed from the station by a shifty character who overheard me ask a "safety officer" for directions to the park. It was already dark and except for him and me, the street was deserted. Not wishing my children to wonder how my body parts came to be scattered throughout the park - if they were found at all - I turned around a block or so from the station and went back to my hotel. Several weeks later, back home in the States, it finally dawned that I *could've* taken a cab from the station to the open air theatre! Duh....
