My "overnight stays" tend to be camping trips - so I tend to pack a lot of camping gear and only just as much as I need as far as clothing.  All the gear takes up the most space so we pack personal belongings on the lighter side.  Typically only enough to fill a small backpack.  The more you travel overnight the easier it is I think to condense and only take what you truly need.

I used to bring everything but the kitchen sink - but it just ended up complicating things and making extra unnecessary work smile.

Change of underwear and toiletry necessary. Unless I am going where dressing is called for . That adds another layer.

Camping is the same if you go overnight or for a week

One backpack's worth. Shampo, conditioner, one set of pj's, one set of day clothes, straightener, razor, 1 lotion, socks, my purse, a few movies, my laptop, a book or two, and a few hours of homework.
