Why do some countries have their name prefixed with "the"
the Gambia, The Camerouns etc
Don't know, but the same thing happens in Maine with the streets. Everyone refers to them as 'the Bar Harbor Road', 'the Griffin Road.' etc.
With the streets it is different. when you refer to a street as The Kent Road, that means, the road that goes to Kent
