In advance, if you book in advance sometimes the fare will be cheaper also. At the last minute you may not have any available seats and you have more chances in ending up cancelling the trip.

If you are not that kind of "prompt" person and  not linked to dates, well in advance is he option. Besides, It's usually much cheaper wink

Like most things in life, it depends.

If your goal is a cheap flight, I believe you're more likely to save money by booking in advance during a non-peak season to lock in a good price.

Airlines are pretty smart these days at filling their planes full of passengers.

Demand from last minute bookings usually leads to demand exceeding capacity - meaning airlines will tend to charge more.

Its always risky and unpredictable whether you will get a good fare bargain if you book your flights at the last moment. What if you dont get discounted fares, or there isnt any flight cancellations to get a seat at all and you have to go as well. You will have to make do even at a higher price then. so might aswell plan and book in advance:)
