I'd give them an Android smartphone with dual CDMA & GSM connectivity, so they'll be able to contact whomever they need to while abroad.  Also these types of phones can connect to wifi connections for internet functions so they can always be connected in some way.

Wow and here I am thinking band aids and antiseptic ointments. I guess I am old school. Awesome idea, it is super important to have a link back home. Thank you for sharing.

Band aids and antiseptic ointments are important too, but if you don't have your daily supply of pictures of internet cats then you've got a crisis on your hands.

A blog .... so they could keep a daily journal of what they are doing which i could see and comment on and the trip would be saved forever.

Oh my goodness, I would never have thought of that! I even have a blog. Great suggestion thank you.

But I think that would be more of something they would need to create themselves, if interested. It would be more of a suggestion to the young adult, rather than a gift. At least I'd think.

Just as you would give a journal or scrapbook, you would give a blog ---

I would give them a translation guide and lots of international phone cards. If he's going to Africa a 5 dollar phone card last about 20 minutes.

That is a very good idea because the local folks in your destination country love to hear visitors speaking their language. We earn a lot of respect for trying. Great suggestion!

A membership to the Youth hostels so they save $ on accommodation + other things as well as a money belt to strap around their waist .
Or a good camera to take great photos !

I totally agree, I had a youth hostel membership and it saved me loads. Perhaps if they have a camera you could give them a gift of extra memory cards for the camera. Awesome pic, those teeth look mean! Thanks for sharing.
