I am sooo stoked. I have my first website up (hubby has built me ones but this one was pretty much all me). It is actually pretty rough still, I have pages to post and want to find a better theme (its a wordpress site, pages instead of posts) and design some nicer images for the banner and background. It went live late last night and this morning I already have a spammy comment! Yay! Better then obscurity! I have a link in my profile if you would check it out and let me know what you think?
Gosh I am getting frustrated already, I want to make my banner smaller (from this theme) and remove the tabs on the banner and can't figure it out at all????
The only solution I can see is to find a new theme but then that one may not have the share this button and really do I need to change the theme to get a smaller banner and remove those tabs?!?! I am going nuts
Maybe one of those pro's will come along and turn on the lights here
Hi Kirsten, great site. Sorry I can't help - I'm having similar issues with my own Wordpress blog on gardening. It seems that if you want to create customisable stand-alone pages apart from the "bloggy" page (as I do) you need to use a so-called child theme as opposed to the parent theme that you're provided with. To enable this feature costs $35 apparently - grr! (I'm using the Heatmap theme for my blog.)
Perhaps the theme you're using has a help feature or forum on its site?
EmpressFelicity - I can totally sympathize atm. When I was a kid and could not understand or do something (like double digit multiplication) I would dissolve into tears, and well some things never change. I think maybe I need to give it a rest and focus on something I can understand and do, like finding a new artist to feature. With this and something else I can't make heads or tails of I am crying and feeling stupid for crying
This may not be rocket science but I think it may be close to brain surgery!
May be that when I am a bit more peace full I can see about contacting the theme developer and asking about axing the tabs on the header and reducing its size for small laptops and such. For the moment it seems acceptable and able to do the job
Great news about your fairy art site being up and running Kirsten, hope it is really successful.
Congratulations on getting it up and running. Sorry I can't help with any technical aspects. I will go check it out and see what it looks like.
Thanks! I think I may want to try to contact the theme designer or something to figure out how to do the bits I am trying for. At least it is acceptable and can be modified in time anyway. A WP illiterates forum might be what I need LOL. The funny thing is that a WP site is the easy alternative too!
I would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all you lovely folks who have had a look at my new site and left comments, you guys are making my day!
I would have just been happy with a post here saying, looks good or could due to have this done but these comments and even backlinks to your sites are over and above anything I would have asked for or expected.
I have had advice that the banner needs work, get rid of the tabs and make it smaller for laptops, good advice and beyond what I know how to do atm (homework for me I guess). I also have had the suggestion of an example image for each artist on the 'home' page (from my MIL, and just that I should have pics, I figure a sample of each artist is the way to go).
Seriously guys, I think I will have to figure out a way to have a links bookmark page (for backlinking cool stuff, obviously, that is not listed with the main pages, so as not to clutter things up) and add either hubs or website links for those of you that have been so generous in giving my new site organic back links. It may take me awhile to work it all out, something about subpages I think but has been a part of my plan for my own hubs and store etc. anyway

I got that far: Domain name, web host; paid for both. Get on my cPanel and I'm lost. I'm not even sure if my domain name is connected to the host. I did put the domain name in when I bought the webhost package, but I know there's more to it on both ends: Registrar and host.If needed, I'm using...

For those of you who have experience with Wordpress websites or blogs, what is the best advice you would give to someone just getting started? Do you put ads on it from the start? Do you prefer pages or posts? Just any kind of advice that maybe you learned along the way.

I know that several hubbers here set up separate web sites under domain names they own themselves. I would appreciate any feedback or advice on the best way to do this especially for people (like me) who aren't total techies but do have basic web experience. Which web hosting services do you...

I know this isn't a suggestion for a new feature, I'm suggesting the removal of one, but this seemed the best category for my post and the most likely location for it to be seen by a staff member. Can we all think back to January of 2011 when Hubpages traffic was decimated by the original Panda...

So, on a couple of my sites, on which I use the same theme, I use a banner ad at the top of posts; it's cut off on the right side, in other words, not showing the whole ad. However, it shows probably at least 90%of the ad. I mean, you can see what the ad is for and what it's about. So, my question...

I've decided I need to start a wordpress site - hell this year I'm doing everything. I figured after fifteen years online why on earth am I not doing something to make money?Anyway that's beside the point. It's 1am here and my head hurts - just getting to the point where I can set up the site and...
