    What were they thinking?!?

When we see an inappropriate comment on someone's hub, is it because they didn't understand what they read, they didn't really read it or they just don't care

Your question sparked my interest!  I think some people come here to paint their electronic graffiti and to blow steam however they can, without any consequences. Unfortunate for the adults that enjoy reading, writing, conversing, and learning. I have learned to ignore their internet bullying and go about my Hubpages experience. It could also be for any of the three reasons you mentioned. In either case, unless it is obvious that they misunderstood and I may want to clarify, I ignore.

Thank you for answering. I also ignore but i have to admit, it's sometimes very hard to do that.

The most negative comment I had on HubPages was someone telling me I did not know what I was talking about.  They were rude about it.  In that case the hub was based on my personal experiences.  Saying I did not know what I was talking about when it was based on facts did not make sense to me and there was no need to be rude. On another site I had negative comments that only made sense from the point of view of someone that did not bother to read the whole thing.

I think inappropriate comments are often the result of a person that has a strong opinion before fully reading the hub.  Other times they just want to promote something or write something negative on a random hub to release some anger.

I think you are right. No one has a right to disparage your personal experience! It would seem to be for their own agenda. Thank you for answering.

I do not think that any thought process is involved. I was involved in a Hub where the person took every comment I made and turned it into a negative comment, thus changing the meaning of what I was saying.

I had another person just accused me of not knowing what I was talking about and produced no evidence. I responded by saying, I did not know where he was coming from with that statement and would not try to defend my statement because it was a personal observation and we would let the other participants voice their views about my knowledge. Everyone just ignored the exchange, just as I expected them to do.

Remember the old say, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. I am all for discussion and debate, but if the best comment you have is an insult. it would be better to keep quite or write, I do not or agree, or I think you are wrong. If would be nice if they would explain their view, but not absolutely necessary.

Sadly, no thought process was involved in the comment on the hub that sparked this question! Thank you for answering and for sharing your experiences.

Sometimes people can misread things or misunderstand what you've written. If the former, there's not much you can do except point it out to them, but if the latter, you need to check that what you've written isn't ambiguous.

Sometimes people do comment without reading every word, and so they make assumptions about the part they haven't read! They think they've got the gist of it, but sometimes a writer will change direction before the end of the hub:)  If you write on controversial topics, you might get hostile comments, but that goes with the territory to some extent, and it's best not to take it personally.

Thank you for answering. I see your point. That is always a possibility and when it comes to poetry, there is also the margin that is left to interpretation!
