Former Squidoo Lensmasters - What Do You Like / Dislike About HubPages?

Now that many of you have used HubPages for a few weeks, What Do You Like / Dislike About HubPages?

I don't like the arrows for placing/moving boxes. I'm spending an exorbitant amount of time chasing bouncing boxes around. Nothing stays put. When I get one Amazon box and its text lined up the slightest change renders all my earlier efforts a mess. There has to be a better, more productive way to keep things in place.  It's a bit mind-blowing and exhausting. If anyone has a tip or two, please let me know. Maybe I'm doing things wrong.

I used the arrows at first, and also found it frustrating, but you don't have to do it that way. Use the "organize your content" menu on the right-hand side of the page. There, you can drag and drop to change the order of your capsules.

Yes, definitely open the Organize Your Content box. It's the same sort of drag around interface we had on Squidoo.

The bad part of the organization box is that you're pretty much driving BLIND when using it. I tried that, too but found my results still not favorable. One has to move the content, then go look and see where it landed, THEN go back and try again!

Keep in mind that your Hubs are going to appear differently on different browsers and screen sizes.  One way around it is to have a lot of text modules to break up the text and arrange Amazon ads and pictures around the separate text boxes.

I like the Goals box in the editing screen, because it spells out exactly which marks we should be hitting to create content that fits the HubPages model.

I like that staff members actually visit the Forums, and respond to questions. I also like the immediacy of the reporting tools.

I can't think of anything I don't like. It is what it is.

I too, appreciate professional HQ folks. There was plenty of sarcasm and blatant disregard @ Squidoo for writers' legit concerns. And the favoritism was maddening. One couldn't report 'certain' rampant copy/pasters and expect *any* degree of action.

I miss module subtitles and descriptions. On Squidoo we could enter those for any module. Subtitles were converted into regular titles, which I have to shorten now so they would fit nicely.

Descriptions for any module were also nice, for example to ask a more detailed question on comments or poll modules.

I don't like the small font for titles.

I love the button to check for broken links.

I love that I can report plagiarism and reasonably expect it to get removed from HP. You have no idea how big of a peeve of mine it was that reporting didn't work on Squidoo!

I love the big increase in views.

    I like the GUI.

I like how helpful Hubbers have been.

I like how much more professional HP looks.

I like a lot more things I'm not going to bother listing.
    ------------------------------------------------------------
I strongly dislike that some of my tutorials have had some of their text removed, making them make no sense.

I strongly dislike that seventy of my former lenses are now vast walls of text, including the first 40,000 words of the novel I was serializing on Squidoo.

I dislike that HubPages considers all LGBT material, including material of mine print published in children's textbooks to be adult content.

I dislike that I have to be stingy with links crediting photos.

I dislike that the forum is not intuitive to navigate.

I dislike that links to .org, .gov, and .edu websites do not appear to be whitelisted.

I like most things people here have mentioned, including the hints in edit mode, the GUI on the whole though I've had the odd glitch with the module placement, the actual participation of the owners in the forums and the quick responses to people's issues, the learning centre and the general professional approach of the site.

Dislikes? That you have to have AdSense to participate in the HP program as it's going to take time to fix my transferred articles and let them mature, the obscurity of the link to add your own Amazon account in the meantime which took days to find, having to fix a long article in one go as long blocks of time are not readily available at present.

I like how easy it is to edit a page.  I find it easier than originally anticipated.  Thank you for making it "user friendly"  I also like the "goals" on the top of the page so I have something to gauge reworking my lenses towards.  I appreciate the forums, tutorials and Q&A for finding help.  Plus I like how friendly and welcoming HP's writers and staff are towards us "former Squids".

I don't like that earning from eBay and Amazon is based on Adsense approval.  I was denied of course as many other newly transferred writers were which concerns me on how long it will take to work this out with Google Adsense.

I am surprised that HubPages didn't have some kind of workaround for the eBay and Amazon programs.  HubPages is good in a lot of ways, but their business savvy is sometimes lacking.  Not a good way to keep thousands of newcomers happy.

I still have a lot of squidoo pages to revise for hubpages, but so far I really like the explicit feedback on lenses - wish the red triangles were a different color though - hard to get used to not panicking when I see them! I also wish we could place photos on the left as well as the right or centered.

I like how supportive the other HP members have been.
I like how the staff actually shows up in the forums. Their responsiveness is awesome.
I like the fact that I might actually be able to earn money here,(I can hope, right?) and not have to worry about the tier program.
I don't like that I can't see the full category of pages.
I don't like the look of heading 3 font.
I don't like the way my duel modules look or that I can't let them show less comments.
I don't like that editing polls and comment modules will erase all the previous input.

Beyond those, I agree with the majority of what everyone else said.

    I love:
-the text modules features and the ease with which I can rearrange my modules.
-the goal box is nice and has inspired me to add more to some of my pages.
-the immediate feedback of what needs to be changed (3 links to one website, a broken link that is highlighted, etc.).

I am upset that a "Table of Contents" page isn't allowed.  All of my pages have an order and connection and not allowing for a TOC is making it extremely difficult for my readers to easily navigate through my pages.  I have already received dozens of comments from readers regarding this.

I like the options in recipe capsules and how they can be adapted for other uses.

I like all the options in the quiz modules (but i'm not yet sure if google can see that content or not).

I like the other hubbers and the fact they didn't really throw much of a hissy fit when we all arrived (I can't say it would have been the same had it been the other way around).

I don't like the 2 link limit - especially for photo credits.  I really don't like this.  Two just isn't enough.

I don't like that we can't align photos to the left or have 2 side by side.

I don't like that some of my content disappeared.

I like the broken links tool.

Me, the waiting time for me to earn. I can't start earning because my Google Adsense application has been disapproved.

Very unhapy with the snip business. Supposedly makes sense to the editing person, but I have spent thirty years building my " brand " - me. I write about quiltmaking, and my titles have worked very well before without snipping. Why doesn't someone ask if the topic is correct technically first?
Very very very unhappy to have my best performing quilting technique lens moved to a niche that is called Feltxxxx? Felting and quiltmaking have nothing in common and I think it degrades my expertise to be listed on such a niche.
    Rant over.
    Loved Squidoo,

I agree with you Jan.  It would be one thing if they gave us a warning that they were going to edit / snip our Hubs and ask if we wanted them moved to the niche sites.  Taking control away from the writer is not a good way to keep people happy.

I dislike that they are removing supporting links to authoritative sources and resources. It makes the hubs look like they were written to be posted to a teen's blog. They should be trying to make them look more professional, instead.

    3. Rock_nj profile image90
Rock_njposted 8 years agoin reply to this

Kylyssa - Deleting links to authoritative sources and resources is part of HP efforts to please Google.  But, as you said, it cheapens the look of our Hubs to not have citations.  Nothing wrong with having footnotes that support a piece of writing.

    4. Kylyssa profile image90
Kylyssaposted 8 years agoin reply to this

The problem is that they are wrong. Google actually likes it when a page links to authoritative sites on the same topic. Readers are becoming more educated and properly supported articles are becoming the norm.
