Yes! Some of the most successful people in the world didn't go to college or dropped out like Bill gates. Even though he went back to graduate he was already successful with Microsoft. Knowledge is easier to access than ever today with the advent of the internet. Just decide what you are passionate about and start learning. There are also many mentors online that can help you often for free. Join forums in topics that interest you and read the top ten books in your chosen field. This will make you a real expert.

    Take Care,
    Jim

Yes.  I don't believe everyone feels the urge or calling to go to college and there are many other ways to educate yourself.  If you are talking about just knowledge, the internet is full of sources of knowledge. Books are also amazing sources of education.  Fiction and non fiction books alike can teach various topics.  As for gaining vocational education without going to college, there are a number of tech schools that offer brief training in various fields.  On the job training is also a great way gain knowledge of a particular industry, particularly construction, restaurant work, etc.  College is not for everyone, but continuing to learn as we get older is very important.

Yes I believe people can educate themselves. However the answer comes with "buts". For example I do not believe the vast majority of people could teach themselves to be doctors as it requires resources which only educational facilities can provide. But many things require little more than heavy reading and practice which given access to the relevant materials we could all theoretically do if we had the appropriate aptitude. To give another example I have no aptitude for carpentry so although I can learn the skills in theory I am incapable of putting them into practice.

    I hope that helps.

You make a good point about the resources. In some fields you can only find the opportunities and experiences in an educational facility.

It takes a great deal of discipline to educate yourself. Time must be set aside for study, not just reading, but serious study. It is like homework for a student in school, there must be a specific time and place, as well as a source of information and activities that will enrich the understanding of the topic in question. Tests can be taken for certification of knowledge. The Praxis series are tests that indicate a level of knowledge in various subjects. Passing these tests is the equivalent of having college level credits. Many degrees and certifications require a certain level of understanding and expertise. It is possible at many universities to obtain credit for past experience through portfolio work, letters of recommendation, the writing of papers, and passing tests such as the Praxis.

Indeed! Reading is a great way to educate yourself; great novels, books, internet. Also education opportunities abound on-line education from home. Personally I am not a fan of educating children in the home because of the lack of socialization; but this is a way to get your education also.
