    Can Anyone Tell Me What This Moth Is?

    I know it is one of the most beautiful moths I have ever seen. I've seen the large green ones. But never this one until now.

    I think it's one of the swallowtail group of moths if it is a moth, but it's colourful enough to be a swallowtail butterfly too. There are a lot of different species of each and I haven't been able to pin point yours for 100% certain sure. But the closest match I can come up with is Urania ripheus, the sunset moth, which is described as a day flying moth from Madagascar -so if you found it locally to you in the USA it is way out of its normal range. Beautiful though - thanks for posting it.

    Took a while to find, but it is the Madagascan Sunset Moth, which is frequently mistaken for a Swallowtail Butterfly.

    Yes Clairemy is right. It is Madagascan Sunset Moth (Urania Riphaeus). I thought it was a butterfly because of the thinness of the wings and fragility since moths are ususally powdery, thick winged and bodied and usually are less colorful (lunar moths and now Madagascan Sunset Moths are exceptions to the rule). I have never seen a lepidoptera with 3 tail points but you live and learn don't you?
