   Motivations are different for everyone.  Ego, waking up on the wrong side of the bed, passion for the subject, ignorance of facts, a love of debate or drama, a need to be "better than" someone else, even a misguided desire to help people because you feel your way is the best way to live.  There are many motivators that can cause people to act out.  Another big reason is that some people feel threatened by different ideas that they don't fully understand.  The bright side is that we don't burn people for heresy and such anymore - now we just brawl on internet forums .

      ChristinS, YOU'RE so succinct in your response.  We may not physically burn people for "heresy" at the stake but we psychologically stigmatize and even ostracize them. You have given me an excellent idea for a future hub.

   This is a great question gm since you are one of the main one's who does exactly what you are describing. Going as far as personally attacking someone and telling them they need psychological help because they disagree with your point of view.
   
   You are a liberal, I am a conservative. Of course, we are going to disagree. But, the personal attacks are going way too far. You would think someone who portrays themselves to be as intelligent as you do that you would be above this type of behavior. I suppose not.

      Yes, sometimes I can be highly vitepurative and vitriolic.  For that, I deeply apologize to you and wish you and yours a Merry Christmas.  Very sorry for this egregious behavior on my part.
