Do you think it is okay for mothers to let their babies sleep in bed with them?
I think it is great for bonding. Here in western countries many are either selfish about the issue or fear SIDS. However in Japan they have one of the lowest SIDS rates and having an infant sleeping in a crib is almost unheard of. Co-Sleeping is the common practice in the majority of countries with low SIDS rates. Also parents who co sleep are more likely to succeed at breastfeeding. If the mother is working a day job it can give her extra bonding time. There are many benefits to co sleeping.
With that said though if a parent is taking sleeping medications or is a heavy sleeper the baby should not sleep directly in the bed.
I am typically a light sleeper but being a new mother is so tiring that i was always afraid I'd not wake up if my baby was in bed with me and needed help. Plus I had an alarm in her crib that would sound if she stopped moving or breathing.
It is good to sleep together. It create great bonding. Here in india baby always sleep with mother.
I can definitely see where it would help build a bond.
I sure do. My first child slept with me for a while. Unfortunately with my second child is was less practical. But it was a wonderful bonding experience and frankly, if my oldest daughter hadn't slept with me, I would have never gotten any sleep.
Awww, my daughter is 3 and sleeps with me but she kicks my back and pushes me off the bed! My son is 1 and thankfully doesn't want to sleep with me yet. I don't think I could handle two kicking me all night!
The only way my daughter would sleep was if she slept beside me, and it does seem to make you more close and much more bonded than other moms and kids. The only problem is that I let her sleep in my bed for too long and she is five and still hasn't really broken the habit. As long as you sleep train them before they are too old, I think it is a great thing to do!
My daughter is 3 and a half now and she has to fall asleep in my bed. If I take her to her room after she is asleep she usually wakes up a few hours later and comes back into bed with me!
I didn't allow my first two children to sleep with my ex and I, but our third child, the baby, has been sleeping with us all along. It's an amazing bonding experience that we didn't allow with our first two, maybe just because he's the baby, but the closeness is something I wouldn't give up for anything in the world.
Aww, I love cuddling with my little girl at night. Until she tries to push me out of bed that is!
i have heard from many friends that it is okay for babies to sleep with mommies but not for toddlers. In my case, my son is 6 years old and he is still sleeping with me in the same room but different beds. He says he loves my smell, my hugs, patting and humming. Couldn't sleep without them.Tried to put him in his own room but refused to let me go. Might have to sneak back to my bedroom when he is fast asleep!
I guess I did it reverse then. My daughter didn't start sleeping with me until she was a toddler!
I have a friend whose granddaughter was smothered while sleeping in bed with her mother. I would not recommend it at all. It was tragic and senseless and so unnecessary for that little girl to die. All it takes is one time that you’re sleeping too deeply.
Shellie, I am a very light sleeper but that is still something i always worried about. I never did let my babies sleep with me while they were still little babies. I did zonk out a couple times during those late night feedings though!
It is completely natural and if done properly safe. My friends son stopped breathing in his sleep and she woke and could help him. If he had not been asleep next to her or in another room he may of died. Many other cultures consider it the norm and it is what other species who keep their young with them do. I loved it with my children and it had the advantage of making night feeds much easier, especially if you are breastfeeding too.
I liked having my daughter in her bassinet next to me but I was always scared to let her sleep with me until she was 1. I actually had one of those motion monitors that would sound an alarm if she stopped breathing in her sleep. Those work well.

I have been an insomniac all of my life. Even as a young child I remember laying in bed night after night, trying to occupy my mind to starve off the crazies. It has stayed with me my whole life and I will probably have to deal with it forever. I'm lucky if I sleep 3 hours a night, if I...
