Which do you think is smarter, Cats or Dogs?

   So which do you think is smarter, cats or dogs? I know that all their personalities differ, and it depends on the breeds. But overall, I'd have to go with the felines, cats. Yes dogs have a higher social intelligence that the cat can't match. But, cats seem way more intelligent, very cunning and witty, independant, observant . . .
   Well, what do you think? Please follow up on you answer, give an explanation . . .
   
   P.S.- It has not been stated true that a dog can recognize itself in the mirror and cats cannot. Cats can keep a self image . . .

   Having shared time with canines and felines, I'd say they can't be compared --two  entirely different beings.

        I agree to an extent...My cat is a flippin genius but can't be trained like a dog.  Is a trained dog just parroting a positively reinforced behavior, I think so.  Both when abandoned will go ferrel, but i believe the social skills of the dog definitely gives it the advantage as far as survival...I have seen hundreds of cats abandoned at our farm and they can't survive without a human to care for them, however, there are exceptions.  I say the dog...

               Ooops, sorry if I derailed the debate.
               
               My personal chice is cat-- though I have not had one in a long time, and probably will not ever, because my Daughter -in-law is allergic to cats, and I would rather see my grandchildren than have a cat.
               Some of the dogs we have had have been pretty good, but I appreciate the cat self- sufficiency.

   I believe a dog is smarter then a cat, however I have seen some little frisky felines act as if they were just as smart as a dog, just depends on who the owner is and how much they have taught there wonderful little friends. Just as Rochelle stated you cannot compare the two as there differences.

   I think, however, that an apple might well be smarter than one of my two dogs.  It'd be a close call.

   Cats are simply subtler than are dogs.  One way to explain might be that if they were humans, cats would be introverts and dogs would be extroverts.  It's not really about social intelligence, either, because both have their own 'way.'
   
   My cat is independent, tough, and playful...  Our dog is--well, she's an unusual dog--smart and kind of emotional...

      That is true.  My cat is a good mouser, but the mice in my house eat till they are gorged then Kat makes her move instead of STOPPING the mice first.

            Nope, eats them in bed...I wake up to her crunching on them all winter long.  She doesn't dare do that around momma!    This trailer has more holes in it than swiss cheese.

               I find dead birds around my house sometimes, I live next door to crazy cat people. Got like five of them on the front porch of their house at all times. Then they cross over the line and I let my dog at them when I can. I'm betting they have another ten inside the house.

                     The dude doesn't work and sometimes he walks around the neighborhood drunk, with his shirt off, and sometimes he comes over and tells me my dog is scaring his cats. I told him his cats drop terds by my trash cans and they're too wet too pick up. They stink bad.

                        Sounds like you have neighbors like mine!  Rather than the cats pooping next to my trash, it is actually the neighbor and those turds are too wet to pick up as well!

   Oh man. You guys are lucky your neighbors don't have cows.
   Now, when are we going to have the apples vs. oranges debate? they both have lots of fiber, Oranges are jucier.  Apples are good in pies. Oh, waitaminit, this is the pets forum.

    Cats have it sussed, you wont ever hear from it until it wants feeding. Dogs show more affection as they are generally better animals to keep.

    I think cats are smarter. They are also more independent and retain their hunting skills. Dogs show more affection than cats though, which is probably why people tend to love their dogs more.

    My dog told me he is smarter, but he comes when called. The cat wouldnt answer but she has me tied around her paw...in her deviousness, she is probably the smarter of two.

    They're both pretty smart, but I think how smart either one is depends on how much their owner talks to them and generally treats them in a way that encourages their learning.  I've had/known both cats and dogs that are just mind-bogglingly intelligent, to the point where people try to see if something they've done is just a coincidence or not (and it's never coincidence).
    
    I think sometimes people assume dogs are smarter, and because they do they may not even bother to try to communicate much or relate to a cat.  As someone who has had a lot of long-term, long-living, cats; I have seen how they can be just like dogs when it comes to relating to people; or becoming really smart about how things are done in the house.

    cats are definitely cleverer thus why they have the freedom to come and go as they please, where as a dog has to be taken out, cats get what they want all the time!

    I think it depends on the cat or dog's personality. Some are just smarter than others. Very much like humans in that respect. But I still think the old saying is very true:
    
    "Dogs have masters; cats have staff."

    Just because a dog takes orders and is happier being looked after, doesn't mean it's any less intelligent than a cat. Dogs are naturally more obedient, while cats are rebels. Cats maybe good at manipulating their masters into getting what they want, but dogs aren't left out you know. They are clever in their own sense, i mean the constant need to tell them what to do all the time gets them the most attention, which is probably what they want. All I can say is that dogs are the more favoured pet to that of the cat, so they must be doing something right.

    Well....my dog gets to sleep all day, has a gazillion toys, doesn't have to work, gets fed when she wants and has me working my fingers to the bone to keep her housed, happy and healthy.
    
    Now I don't know whether cats or dogs are smarter but I know my dog is certainly smarter than me!

    Cat's are smarter, they get fed & pampered by us and then sleep. What a life!
    Dogs have to work for their food and attention, and don't know how to play their owners to get what they want. Dogs do as they are told basically, and have to sleep in a cold kennel or cramped up bed in the corner of the kitchen! Cat's are secretly the highest life form on the planet
