I believe this is a total waste of taxpayer money especially give the high salaries paid to the executives. These stations rely on donations as well as government money so they can survive without taxpayers help.

Um, in a word, NO.  If the stations truly have anything of value to offer, they should sell advertising (like 95% of other stations do) and actually be able to compete.

It is the same reason why the National Endowment for the Arts should be eliminated.  Why should artists that can't survive in the free market be propped up by government?

But the problem with that is that the commercial interest influences the content, no big deal if it's game shows but if it influences the News then that is a big deal!

Then perhaps you can explain why government supported operations such as NPR and PBS have a decidedly liberal slant?  It's not okay for commercial interests to influence the content but it is okay for government interests to influence the content?

        You lost me, John......

Facts are liberal? No, that's not it...
Maybe it's that conservatives don't care as much about facts?

Or maybe it's just an imagined liberal slant, since it's different from your conservative worldview, and different can't possibly simply mean "not conservatively biased?"

          1. profile image49
ShortStoryposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Or maybe there most certainly is a liberal slant and you can't see it because you are yourself liberal and therefore see such bias as 'fact'?

I believe it depends on what the station broadcasts. I don't want my tax money paying for some silly reality tv show, but I would support it being used to fund interesting documentaries or quality drama pieces.

We all know why NPR and PBS have a liberal slant... the huge infusion of cash from America's favorite liberal George Soros! This is another reason why public money shouldn't go into broadcasting. In fact if it wasn't for public money being funneled by unions and lobbies by public entities democrats wouldn exist especially in their current socialist form.

They also get grants from Archer Daniels Midland, the Ford Foundation, Edutopia (George Lucas' foundation) Wal-Mart, and Starbucks.

You wave George Soros around like he's the devil or something, and anything he touches must be evil.

It's making you sound like a nutjob. You might want to tone down the crazy talk if you want people to take you seriously.

In his own words America is oppressive and stands in the way of his goal of a new world order... there is no way to misconstrue this... he is the enemy of America... but if course you libs and democrats want what he wants so you like him... no surprise there!

Total federal spending in 2010? $3,456,000,000,000.
Total federal funding for the corporation for public broadcasting? $430,000,000.

That's .000124% of the federal budget.

Way to take on the big issues.

Its sooo small they should have no problem making it up... heck Soros could just write them a check!
For us Americans every little bit helps! We could use that money for something else like lowering the deficit.

If you want the public to be influenced by 'shock jocks' who want to go to War with anyone or any  Nation they find disagreeable.  Or take a considered NPR view such as Jim Lehrer Newshour who disseminate the issues calmly... Need I go on ?

They can continue to do what they do without OUR money... if the public likes what they gave to offer the public will support them with their donations.

The Jim Lehrer Newshour to the best of my knowledge is supported by public donations & philanthropies.   The Murdoch Press with many of its tax-loss making companies is equally suported by the Taxapayer by not paying tax legally by offseting  the actuaL tax it pays geenerally by the loss making companies...

We get Jim in Australia and his considered views are a breath of fresh air after watching the shock jocks vying for the biggest "story"  to grab the early news spot.
I'm waiting on Beck to link Obama with all the natural disasters in the world next.

The Australian ABC and UK's BBC knows how to do news. They get experts from varied  backgrounds to offer informed opinion, then leave you to do the dissemination.

And neither of these two news sources have USA in front of their name or funding their pocketbook......imagine that.  Federally funded news in the USA is decidedly liberal, decidedly biased, and for the most part quite boring in their presentation of "informed opinion" (ha) as well.

    It's... public broadcasting. public.

    That's... I.

if the government doesn't fund it then it is private broadcast.

    goodbye cruel world
