What Is God?

Genesis Chapter 1 Verse 1 tells us an intersting story about the being mankind has come to call God. It says, "In the beginning God..."  I've meditated on theat phrase for a long time asking not who this God was but what this God is.  Many years ago I told a man of my village I was going to research the what of God and he told me I would go crazy doing such a thing.  What he meant was that my answers might not settle well with the world around me.  Was he right?  I don't think he was.  My search and research of the what of this God has been a wonderful and endless journey of diesovery and learning.  So what is God?

The concept of God goes beyond the statues and icons of the various religions of the world that profess they believe in a Creator or One God.  The Egyptians, despite the long list of their gods, still came back to the concept of a single Creator.  What God was goes beyond the printed word.  If you've ever spent time with the creation events, you certainly have been struck by the fact that the creation events all had a sub-microscopic genesis.  Where did the sub-sub-sub particles that became atoms come from?  We say they were gathered by God from nothingness.  In that case, was there actually a nothingness?  Nothing is made from nothingness.  The power we call God created everything from nothing.  But when did thie Creator have it's genesis?  How, from complete and utter nothingness---emptienss and void--did an intelligent power come into being?

Since God encompasses all state of being, therefore He must be a "who" and not "what"

Since God is the beginning therefore must be from nothing.

So what is this "nothing" which God came out of?

What was His state while he was still within nothing?

The answers are all within and around you.

Nevertheless, When you find them within, then you are able to recognize these things without.

The definition of the Creator God is Who has created everything, the concepts of something and nothing; yet He is on his own; none has created Him. He has no wife or sons and daughter; He does not need them.

The Bible says that 'God is a Spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.' John 4:24 .  The Bible also says He is a consuming fire (Deut. 4:24 and Hebrews 12:29) and that He is love (1 John 4:8 & 16).

      The Bible says... ok

      But what do you say?

What do you know god to be?

From that knowledge comes your testimony not the words of a book. which is not your knowledge but another.

      1. profile image0
prayersposted 13 years agoin reply to this

Witnessing and giving testimony speaks of how God has revealed Himself individually.  To answer the question "What is God?" requires God's Words.  If you are asking who God is to me, He is Creator, Father, Protector, Provider, Savior, Comforter, Friend....  The list goes on.

God is one and unique, he has no partner, he is all knowing and all wise, there is none before him and none after him. He is The Exceedingly Compassionate, The Exceedingly Beneficent, The Exceedingly Gracious.  He is the creator of the universe and everything within it.  One day we will all meet him.  Thanks.

God is a concept created by the ancient human mind in response to a need to understand the world it found itself in.  Even early man must have looked up to the stars and wondered what it all meant.  The development of religion can be seen from the early worship of the Sun or the Moon, or the trees, or the god that caused the earthquakes and the storms or thunder.  Later, this worship of the natural environment developed into the idea that there were gods, which produced these natural forces.  These gods each had their purpose, whether to cause the thunder, or to make the crops grow etc.  Then the idea of monotheism arose in the Middle East, thus giving one god control over all the natural forces.  This monotheism spread over the ancient world as a result of the Roman Empire, replacing former pagan religions or at least combining them with Christianity.  Later European empires continued this spread of Christianity to much of the world, as the empires of the Muslim world spread Islam.

Today in a multi-cultural world, we are all familiar with the gods of different peoples.  Gods come and go, as a result of political  influence or migration to other parts of the planet or simply because they fall out of fashion.  There are many thousands of gods, which have been lost to history, to be replaced by new ones.  And throughout history, people have been happy to slaughter each other in the name of their gods, with the childish belief that their god was bigger and better than those of other people's.  And still the killing continues today, all in the name of a concept, that humanity refuses to grow out of, in spite of all the scientific evidence against there being any kind of god at work in the universe.

God is a living being and just as we are human beings He is a superior being whose limitations are way beyond ours.  He created everything, including the physics that holds this universe together, and created life, but He also works within those laws of nature.  He can communicate with us and loves us.  He has purpose for everything, even if we don't know what it is.

Physics...you know like how the electron goes around the nucleas.  Gravity, E=mc2 and so on...physics.  Is that too hard to understand.  Those are the laws of nature...at least some that we know of.  They are endless.  And no one knows how He did it

Thats what I heard in childhood,

    G- Generation
    O- Operation
    D- Destruction

    In Hindu Religion we have,
    Brahma- The Creator God
    Vishnu- The Preserver God
    And Mahesh- The Destroyer God

Also in nature, its oxygen, nitroger and carbon dioxide.

From my point of view, God is like 'field' (similar to electric field) which stretches from nothing to everything and we are like the 'electrons', which experience the field.

We at least realize that there is something called God,
In Mars and Moon, where the realization goes?

      How thoroughly illogical, Sherlock.

Ego is the source of such evil, not God or religion. Don't be so dense.

And every argument, wife beating, chile abuse which had nothing to do with religious beliefs? Where did they come from?

Again, Sherl, it's ego. That simple and seductive monster that craves to be right and blinds us to any truth.

Sad that there is no label on the thing -- "Dangerous! Loaded Ego!"

But I'm an atheist lonestar, so of course I am bound to be illogical.
Although I didn't actually say God is the source of such evil, simply the excuse.  As I don't believe in God, how could I believe otherwise?  And religion is not to blame for the evil committed in its name, only the people?  Well, who is it that makes up religion, if not people?  And yes, I am blinded to the truth, or rather truths, because there are so many of them to be blinded to.  But I suppose you really mean your version of the truth.

I think it is a mistake of the followers who think Buddha was a god; he never claimed to be as such.

It is like the Christians think that Jesus was a god while he was not a god. He was born of a woman like anybody else.

Jesus and Buddha were messengers prophet of the Creator God and great human beings; righteous persons.

"Sad that there is no label on the thing -- "Dangerous! Loaded Ego!"

Loan77star there is a lot more to all this than simply ego. "Ego is not a dirty word" (Skyhooks) is true.

It is far more complex than ego.

How much ego does it take to try and force feed the psychotic diatribes and threats from mythical tomes and flog them endlessly on threads like this as the only "truth?" smile
More than a little I would suggest, but even that is not ego alone.

The myths are now falling like stones, even to the gullible since the religions are no longer permitted to kill those that don't follow their madness. smile

God is Source. This Source is timeless (and because of this we might use the human word "immortal"). This Source is spaceless, but is the creator of all space, as well as persistence (what we perceive as time). This Source does not consist of physical energy or matter. The constraints of E=mc^2 do not apply to this source.

Because this Source is inherently outside of space-time, there is no "coming into being." There is no "before."

The six days of Genesis 1 possess no time. They are the template, blueprint or "Word" of God. The seventh day -- God's day of "rest" -- like the Sabbath, is a day of perfection. For the blueprint of the universe, this perfection can be viewed as "persistence" or "time." God's seventh day has thus lasted 13.7 billion years, so far.

One Hubber said that her atheist son would only ask of God that He be "visible." Some feel that their prayers are not answered, so there must not be a God. Each of these is a sad misconception.

    CREATED IN HIS IMAGE

Genesis 1:26 tells us that God created man in his own image. Just as humans have babies that look human, God's true children are baby gods. This is what has to awaken for us to realize everlasting life. We have to subdue ego with humility in order to accomplish this. But God is a non-physical, spiritual and immortal source of creation, which makes us similar sources of creation.

As humans, we are composite beings: Homo sapiens body, mind (not necessarily brain), ego (not possessing mass, but certainly energy and time), and the true, immortal self -- sleeping off a multi-million-year bender from the illicit party we threw in the Garden. Ego is the result of that party -- that revolt.

We will never "see" God as a "visible" object. That's why the Ten Commandments cautioned against graven images. Such a physical representation would be a lie.

And prayers are always answered, in the affirmative and instantaneously. The problem is that most people are not aware of that for which they truly ask. If they have fear of some negative result, and verbalize "deliver me from this," God answers only the fear for that is what is "asked." Give God a picture of fear, and you receive more fear.

Space is our conceptualization of nothing. So how can "nothing" be created? Space, the absence of everything is omnipresent and eternal, its not a 'thing' to be created?
What is this space time? Is it an object or concept? If its an object, illustrate it. If its a concept, What is the meaning of saying outside space-time?

No real evidence exists to support any of these myths, and scientific evidence is destroying them now that religionists are no longer permitted to kill and torture dissenters. smile

Ta Da! Perfectly stated LS. Outside of the universe is Creator en total and everything within is omni present/omni potent, because the universe is Creator en vapori. The universe is just one expression defined as nature or natural. Perhaps this natural was designed specifically, and most probably for humans...

If God exists, I don't think it can be understood in human terms.  Trying to understand what it is, is beyond human comprehension, and a waste of time.  The fact that different religions have different ideas of what God is, would suggest that these are entirely human ideas used to explain the unexplainable.  Even the language changes, the word "God" is only one used to describe the concept.  The human need to ask the questions, necessarily forces us to come up with the answers, even though these are entirely manmade and have no basis in experience.  It is the setting in stone of the concept of God by all of the religions, which makes any development of the idea of God impossible, as well as being the cause of wars between different peoples who have different ideas of what God is.  It should be possible to believe in a force at work in the universe without the need to describe what that force is.  This would certainly make for a more peaceful world and might free the human imagination from the bondage of fundamentalism.
