I published a Hub with content I already had. It was published in a magazine and on their website. If I am violating a rule here, shouldn't I get some warning?
I'm so new here that I honestly didn't read everything yet. I read a lot on how to write a Hub and spend a lot of time, reading articles in the learning center, but I'm confused now.
Should I take my Hub down? -How many waiters can you meet in one day-
YES, it is clearly duplicate content and will violate the HP rules- please take it down.
A little late, but here's the why (from what I can infer)
Google earlier this year initiated the "Panda" update, which is an attempt to cull the obviously "gaming the system" SEO from their indices and make their searches more relevant. All "article sites" are heavily filtered by this update, and Hubpages is on the periphery of the hit.
Hubpages decided that they need to heavily cull their content (I think every body called it "weeding"), instead of becoming an article farm full of duplicated content that can be found elsewhere. Hubpages is out to make itself more relevant to Google results, and that can only help us.
One of the changes is an automatic filter on 'thou shall not do" items, such as linking to "prohibited" sites, duplicate content, and so on. They want to get to the stuff BEFORE Google indexed it. Apparently sites that have bad articles are penalized in the search results.
Thus, if you have what APPEARS to be dupe content, they are removed BEFORE Google can index them and thus hurt Hubpages and the rest of the hubbers. At least that was the intent. In practice, there are quite a few false positives that require manual review, but it's being improved.
Thanks so much for your answer. How come I didn't receive any warning? For newbies like me, there's so much to read about in the beginning.
Are you certain the original article is still up on the web for all to see?
Take some text from your hub and put it into a Google search and see what results come up. If you find identical text, leave your hub unpublished.
If not, you are free to re-publish.
The reason I am mentioning this is that I tried to publish a hub a week or two ago that included a large tract of text that was duplicate - it was a joke about living in a hot country that suited the hub content to a tee.
I also put a link back to the original source.
That hub lasted 10 minutes after publication before the duplicate warning appeared.
I immediately took off the offending text, but less than 10 minutes later, my hub was automatically unpublished and stayed that way for a week, until it could be manually reviewed.
Your hub was published and no such warning appeared.
Perhaps it is not duplicate after all?
However, the other thought is whether or not you received payment for the article from the magazine, and therefore ownership issues.
Hey IzzyM!
Thanks so much for that tip. I copied some text in google and it found the original text. I never got paid for the article though. I was nerdy enough to even put in a link to my original content leaving it at the end of my Hub.
Duplicate it is:-)! Anyway...I'll be writing some fierce original content for my next Hubs, never forgetting about this Blond Action again:-) LOL!

So, I understand I can't publish any content on here that I have used for another site. But can I publish on here first, then carry those articles over to another site? Is that allowed? Cause on the other sites I write for allow me to republish content on them... Also, I read that the hubs are...

I've rewriiten a HubPages Story after receiving a duplicate post warning. I received another "duplicate post" message. It's not a duplicate post. The new version is almost all new. The only thing I didn't change was the summary and title. What can I do? Is there anyone at Hubpages who can...

I just realized there is a forum section where I can ask this!I am brand new to Hub Pages, and I got a "duplicate" warning on my very first article I submitted. In the past I have always made a point of publishing my content in various places, to make it more accessible to a wider range of...

Curious--If I were to write a Hub about--and featuring--famous quotations, would the quotes trip the duplicate content warning?

I notice several disgruntled Hubbers on Eric's new Hub, saying they're leaving HubPages because of the duplicate content flags. They seem to be misunderstanding what the dup content flag is all about - either they think they're being penalized, or that the flag means they have to delete the Hub.I...

I was reading a Hub on Hubpages, and was concerned to read the advice that the content we use in our Hubs should be unique, not something we've posted elsewhere on the net.I started out on Helium and have nearly 200 articles on that site. When I joined HubPages, I saw it as a great opportunity to...
