For me that has to be,

“I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.” - Galileo

This didn't come from a novel I know but it is my favorite.

    Oh man what to choose.

I guess since my name is lookingforwalden I'd go with

“There is no more fatal blunderer than he who consumes the greater part of his life getting his living.” Thoreau
      Or

"The State never intentionally confronts a man’s sense, intellectual or moral, but only his body, his senses. It is not armed with superior wit or honesty, but with superior physical strength. I was not born to be forced. I will breathe after my own fashion. Let us see who is the strongest." again Thoreau

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
    ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

One of my personal favorites.  smile

      Beautiful quote

I always liked this one from Emerson too

      "What lies behind you and
What lies in front of you,
      Pales in comparison to
      What lies inside you."

It's my favorite mushy quote lol

My favorite writer of all time is Pope. In my opinion he was better than Shakespeare.
I use quotes from him in arguments all the time as my closer. I think the iambic pentameter helps. Lol
I believe he is the second highest quoted English author in history.

'Tis hard to say, if greater Want of Skill
Appear in Writing or in Judging ill,

"If you want to know what God thinks about money just look at the people He gives it to."

    “Sir, I admit your
    general rule,
    That every poet is a fool;
But you yourself may serve to show it,
That every fool is not a poet.”

There are many, many more from Pope. If you like poetry and haven't read rape of the lock or essay on criticism I definitely recommend them. I got them for free on my iPad since they are in public domain.
