I did this in a class way back in high school and thought I'd share it with you all
You might find it helpful if you're suffering from writer's block.
If not, it's still fun to try!
We call this a Custom Order Poem.
Basically, you are giving a set of directions and your job is to create the poem based on the directions you were given.
The layout is like this:
The 1st stanza has ___# of lines, ___# of words per line with the subject of ________. Use these words _____ ______ _____ _____ (pick 4 words)
The 2nd stanza uses the same outline as the 1st, but with different numbers and words.
Stanza 3 and 4 have five lines each, no min. or max length about ________ using __________ as a metaphor
Stanza 5 has ten lines; the odd lines are same line repeating, evens don’t logically follow previous.
Stanza 6 is a suite of seven haiku* in the voice and point of view of __________ who __________
*for those that don't know, a haiku follows this form:
line 1 - 5 syllables
line 2 - 7
line 3 - 5
and repeat...
for this custom order poem, you do that seven times.
So that's the basic form of a custom order poem. Usually, someone fills in the blanks and then gives it to someone else who then has to write the actual poem.
So, I'll start by filling out the directions above. The first person has to create a poem using the directions. Then, copy and paste the directions and fill in your own directions for the next person. The second person will use the first person's directions for their poem, then create directions for the third person, and so on. Don't forget to post your poems here for us all to read, too!
Have fun!
Custom Order Poem Directions for the first person:
The 1st stanza has 7 of lines, 2 words per line with the subject of rain. Use these words: chicken, furry, green, pop
The 2nd stanza 3 lines, 8 words per line, subject: darkness. words: light, bang, shake, roll
Stanza 3 and 4 have five lines each, no min. or max length about television using rugs as a metaphor
Stanza 5 has ten lines; the odd lines are same line repeating, evens don’t logically follow previous. (you have control over this one)
Stanza 6 is a suite of seven haiku* in the voice and point of view of a llama who likes ziti
GO!
Thanks for this. I'm always looking for different ways to write poems and this way is really interesting. I love how it's interchangeable with the different stanzas. I really like that it's kind of challenging my skills and versatility as a poet. I will definitely be using this the next time I feel like being a little more creative than usual. Thanks again MissKatieLynne.
You are most welcome If you do create one, be sure to share! I love reading things like this

I don't just mean hubpages, though that counts, too. I mean when you feel that creative urge and you want to sit down and let the language flow until something beautiful comes out, whether it's a short story, a bit of a novel, a poem or, yes, a hub.

I dont know about you but I have the best inspiration for articles in the strangest of places, I would say the best two for me are in the shower or waking in the middle of the night!Where and when are your creative juices flowing at the best?

Thanks kimback for the inspiration to do this with your last topic.... Simple rules: Every two lines have to rhyme, the next two lines have to rhyme as well but be different from the first lines. Be creative and make it fun! I'll start with the first two lines to give it a sense of...
