As human beings, the greatest wisdom we can discover is our connection with every life-form. Take it from a retired philosopher, and chew the gum. smile

Connection with every life-form, what do you mean?

Once a philosopher, always a philosopher. In reality we're all philosophers, for we all have a form of philosophy. Wether it be geared toward science, religion or whatever. It's a set of principals that we apply to our daily living condition.

May I quote a Native America, Isna La-Wica (Lone Man)? When he was a young man, he went to a medicine-man (priest) for advice concerning his future. The medicine-man said, "I have not much to tell you except to help you understand this earth on which you live. If a man is to do well, he must not follow his inclination, but by an understanding of the ways of the animals and his natural surroundings, gained through close observation. The earth is large and on it live many animals. The earth is under the protection of something which at times becomes visible to the eye."

These people saw their connection to the "Great Spirit", the earth and rest of the creation. They did not know about the concept of real estate. They belong to the earth, no man can own any part of the earth. They were taught to "leave a soft footprint". They are not as savage as we portray them in Hollywood. They were happy and free (for the most part).

We adhere to the Greco-Roman-Babylonian model of civilization. We conquer the earth to advance our agenda of power and wealth. We don't care for connections that impede our "progress". Read Jane Goodall's "The Naked Ape". We are in captivity, and we behave like caged monkeys.

Philosophers don't retire. You are still in business Golden Bird.

Hey Chip, I just turned the computer on, and saw this post. I am happy to see you back. Time passes very swiftly sometimes. Sometimes, man changes with time, sometimes it changes him.

Though I am not a researcher in the subject of civilization, but I am living one myself, the Hindu culture, so I do understand the concept somewhat. In the end, I believe, a culture can not sustain much which loses contact with the "Great Spirit". Rome did not. It fell because of the cruelty and blood-thirst it had grown.

Wealth and power are very subjective elements. No man is immortal to enjoy his wealth for a long time. I can still recommend one book, the Upanishads; it talks much sense, though it's a pretty old book.

Rome? Oppulance and debauchery might have contributed as well

On your recommendation, I will make that read. I believe the Indian culture has a lot to teach the world. I believe African, Asian, and all countries have a lot to offer. I feel strongly that people should not abandon their regional identity to melt into a "New World Order" of cultural mush. Up and coming nations should be true to themselves, and show us how to do it. I like the Costa Rican attitude, "Pura Vida". The pure life.

Skim that book, because you will find there much metaphysics of little or no value. But here and there, I guess, you may find jewels of true wisdom which are of universal value.

There is a strange concept in the Upanishads, called Brahman. Brahman, in essence, is the Soul of the World, the Ultimate Reality, which is veiled by Maya or Illusion- our task is to find that hidden reality. That sounds a little insane, but hold me true, if I am a true poet in any sense, I see no better knowledge or philosophy than that one.

I call Americans my brothers. Is the world our home? In the end, Brahman will save me. :-)

Lead me from the unreal to the Real.
Lead me from darkness to Light.
Lead me from death to Immortality
          .
