   Ramadan Kareem to my many friends and colleagues in Qatar and Dubai. It takes a lot of dedication to fast for a month, dawn till dusk, when the daytime temperatures are in the high forties (120 plus, in Faerenheit). I admire your resolve. Enjoy your holy month.

      Ramadan mubarak....may Allah SWS accept and reward your hardships. Surely its not something that anyone can do without the help of Allah, specially in places like Middle East.

   What is that? They have one whole month as holy time? That is surely admirable fasting that long and in the name of what is holy to them? So who are they?

      In Islam, the ninth lunar month of the calendar is Ramadan. The fast is from before the dawn prayer until after the sunset prayer, when they break their fast with a meal called Iftar. This is the pattern for the whole month. It's a total fast - no food or water. Sexual activity and smoking are also prohibited. It is very hard on outdoor workers in particular.

         It is a very admirable thing to do.   When I was in Libya in 2010 some of my atheist colleagues tried the Ramadan fast to see if they could do it.They didn't last very long.

   Hi everybody, and thanks for joining in !
   
   Yesterday was a nonworking day for me and I spent a lot of it just walking around the city absorbing the atmosphere. There were huge crowds out for the Friday midday prayer time. Mostly in the street, outside the mosques in the full sun. This is tough, because they can't drink water afterwards. (I can, in private of course, because I'm not Muslim).
   
   The best time of day is the early evening. All the small food shops and stalls that have been closed all day set out their wares on the pavements. Many of these are run by non-Muslims but still, no-one eats anything until the mosques all across the city call the sundown prayer, After it's over, it's party time in the streets (well, without music or alcohol, but still a very festive atmosphere).
   
   And suddenly there's the smell of cigarette and shisha smoke everywhere, as smokers everywhere light up for their first fix since 4 a.m. This is the Middle East, folks

      @ Paraglider-- thank you very much for letting us know about how Ramadan is celebrated in Qatar. I had a brief experience of the heat at Doha, where we changed our Qatar Airways plane and I know how hot it is. Outside it was like 50 C and I was surprised to see, how the outdoor staff at the airport were able to work-- which many of them now working while fasting.

   Ramadan Mubarak All ... thank you  for sharing the pics paraglider. it sure is a festive atmosphere after sunset ... the last 10 days of ramadan are coming up ... there is a night of power in the last 10 days where muslims stay up all night and pray ... it is believed to be in one of the odd nights of the last 10 days of ramadan which is when the Quran is believed to be completely revealed to our messenger Muhammad. in this night 1 prayer in that night is equivalent to 1000 prayers and a whole load of other worldly and spiritual benefits. To all my muslim brothers and sisters in islam ... if you do pray during the nights i hope you find the night and are rewarded with the unlimited blessings of the night of power.

      Hello Arksys - Yes, the last week or so of Ramadan has a different 'flavour' across the city (Doha). Until now, people have been mostly concerned with the 'mechanics' of it all - the fasting, the working hours, Iftar, late night socialising, etc.  Now the spiritual aspects ramp up and take over. There is a different ambiance altogether which even as an outsider, one can sense.

            Arshad - this is my tenth Middle East Ramadan. My first was in Dubai and the start of Eid al Fitr was also my 50th birthday - perfect for a celebration!
