Are the Ad Layout Changes Permanent? Is Revenue from Skyscaper Shared?

The ad that used to be placed within the text area, usually to the right of the first block of text has gone. I understand that this is an experiment. Could HP confirm whether this change is permanent, or when we will know. Many of my hugs were carefully crafted to ensure this ad appeared above the fold. Now I have layout problems with these hubs - looks like an error!! All these will have to be edited if the change is permanent.

Also can you please confirm that the revenue from the 'skyscraper' ad in the top of the right hand column is shared with authors.
    Thanks,

Joan, thanks for pointing this out. I had not noticed this, but it does make a big difference in the layout of the ad. Plus it is one less ad for us to receive revenue from. It also brings up the question again of whether or not we are receiving revenue from the floating ad now on HP.

The revenue from the skyscraper ad is shared with authors via the Ad Program. smile

As Paul E. mentioned in an earlier thread, we are still testing various layouts to see the impact on yields and traffic. The layouts that you're seeing are not site wide changes and may be different depending on the visitor and/or Hub.

        Can I opt out please?
I would prefer not to be involved in experiments that involve turning my ads off or ruining my carefully crafted layouts.
        Thanks,

You can disable ads on your Hubs on an individual basis or turn off the Ad Program while we do testing. Since this layout is not yet permanent, we do not have a solution to the formatting issues it's causing for certain Hubs. I know that this is frustrating, but rest assured if we stick with this layout we will address the formatting and design problems. This particular test has only been running for a few days and we will need more data before we can ascertain whether it helps or hurts overall yields and traffic.

I hope Hubs that are part of this experiment are not allowed to go through the QAP process!!! I have noticed spacing issues in text  in my Hubs where the Ad once was. This could trigger a negative rating by those making decisions. (That are not our fault, but the testing!)

Based on what I've seen the last few days, me thinks you can cancel this experiment anytime... That, or else the summer doldrums have finally landed on me full force. sad

Yes. But this is a major change. I wish HP would test using a sub-set of Hubs rather than the whole site. If this is a permanent change, I will have to edit hundreds of hubs. It would be nice to know if this is permanent, as it's affecting my reputation! The hubs look busted!

I must admit that I don't really understand the point of inserting text on lovely images. I think that more people will pick up lovely images, that don't have text. Instead I aim to create the intrigue and 'bait' via the image itself. IMO
Anyway good luck with it. Cheers,

wink You obviously don't understand Pinterest very well then.

The first hub I added an MFP to had about 20 pins on an image before changing to an MFP. After adding the MFP it hit 1,000 pins within 2 weeks. It now has over 61,000 pins.

Go read my hubs on MFPs. Quotes may get repins, but they won't generate a lot of traffic. My way will. In fact I now get at least one mini viral traffic hub spike per week, sometimes up to three or more hubs.

FYI the issue with the text wrapping was fixed yesterday and the 250x250 ad was re-enabled on most Hubs.

If you read further on the posted link, he says that it is a test and needs a few more days before they know the results.  That was two days ago.

The ad that has gone was the most important one for me as the entire layout and the text in the first 2-3 paragraphs was designed to gleam clicks from this ad. My guess is that this ad was a very good earner for all of HP. Perhaps this is why my income has dropped in the last two days.

Maybe HP has decided that the 12 extra ad links added recently via the "Related Search ads" have over-cooked the goose, and they decided to dump one ad that is revenue-shared. I would like to know if the skyscaper ad is revenue shared or just HP.
      Ho Hum!

I'm pretty sure that was only a direct paying ad if you are solely on Google Adsense. For everyone that's on the Hubpages Adprogram, the in text ad at the top is not directly paid to the Hubber. So for most people it shouldn't make that much of a difference.
Again the sidebar ad wasn't a directly paid ad unless you were on Google Adsense alone. The only directly paid Adsense ad for those on the Hubpages Adprogram is the one at the bottom of the page on the right - and again a 40/60 split in adcode sharing.
I wrote this lens about it the last time they changed the layout in 2013 - http://lauryallan.hubpages.com/hub/is-t … se-revenue

This is not about the single ad that is directly paid to the hubber. It is about the ads that are shared. This change means that the ad that was most prominent, next to the ad at the top has gone. This means that hubbers have one less ad to get income from. The income from the 'Related Search Ads' in the right hand column and those listed at the bottom ALL goes to HP, it is not shared.

correction - in 2012. And there's a handy pic showing you which ad was the direct paying Adsense ad and how it's changed over the years.

Here is my update of the current situation showing the 'Related Search Ads' (light green) that are not income-shared with Hubbers, and the shared ad that has been deleted. Clearly is it the most prominent one.

Okay, well there ARE some of us who don't participate in the ad program, and make all of our earnings through AdSense, so to say that it won't affect "most" people is pretty much saying we don't matter.

I disagree that removing the ad won't have much effect on HPAds payouts.  Ok, it is not a directly paying ad, but the CPM of your pages must depend on how the shared ads are performing.  That space is prime real estate for ad placement, removing the ad might seriously decrease the CPM for ad payouts.

I really hope it doesn't, because that spot is also great for an image.  And having that ad gave me some formatting issues with some hubs.  So I am glad to see it gone, but not if it seriously decreases earnings.

We will have to wait for the experiment to be over....I guess.

Just a FWIW - my internet is exceptionally slow tonight.

First ads to load on any hub is the 'related search'. The new skyscraper ad is last to load.

Top right is the hotspot for visitors, but on slow connections they will never get the chance to see it at this rate.

But they will see the 'related search' ads, which we hubbers don't get a share of.

    Not happy.

I don't know how this will affect the payouts, if it seriously decreases the CPM.....I guess I will end up hating it.

On the other hand, from a layout point of view, I have to say my hubs look a lot better without it.  When the skyscraper ad was introduced, I thought my hubs looked ad heavy, remember there is one at the top that we don't see when we are logged in!

I do hope is the ad in the sidebar can do as well, or at least not much worse than the right hand side ad.  Because right now I think my hubs (at least the ones I checked) look pretty good!  I definitely hope that we won't have to go to the 3 ads at the top state.

Totally agree about the related ads btw.  Spammy and not exactly fair to us.  I think we are flogging a dead horse here, though.

There is another potential plus to this new ad as well.  Some time ago HP recommended considering a full sized photo as the first capsule.  I've tried this with a MFP; it looks good and although it does cause the reader to scroll down I don't see that as a huge negative.

It also, however, causes that first ad to be off the screen, particularly if the photo is a portrait mode rather than landscape.  That loses a good bit of the effectiveness of that first ad as it isn't nearly "in your face", but the skyscraper ad is still visible upon loading the hub.  I don't see that not being in the text section reduces it's effectiveness, but that's what tests are for.

Yep.  My feeling is if this layout seriously depresses earnings HP will not go with it.  We will see.

My worry is that, given it puts more emphasis on the Related Search Ads, HP revenue may rise, but hubber's revenue might fall.
