I got my first payout and checked my PayPal account. It showed I had received 50 dollars (plus a few cents) from Hubpages. However, my PayPal account balance remains at 0. Is there an explanation for this? Is there some further step and I'm just being stupid?
N.B. I only use the account for Hubpages, and I live in the UK so we use pounds sterling (although I'm told that doesn't affect it).

Is it a new PayPal account? When you first sign up there is a verification process you have to go through before you can have money added to your account.  You link it with a bank account and then have to verify the bank account.

Are you sure the email address is correct?  ie the email account you use for Paypal should be the one you enter in the Account > Earnings > Balance History

I am in the UK so my currency is GBP (British Pounds) but I receive the paymtent in USD $$

You just go to the 'currency converter' in your Paypal account and covert USD to your currency.

It may be that once payment is sent to Pay Pal, it takes a few days for it to clear.  They might not show payment in balance until it is cleared.

Its the new Papypal layout. They only show your balance in GBP on the main page - I spent ages trying to find my USD balance to convert it (there is a button to use the old layout which made it easier to find). I think probably you do have the USD in your account but its just not being shown immediately when you log in.

      electronician,

Thank you; it was the layout. Apparently there are separate balances for each currency. Second question then, if I may: How do you get it out? Do you withdraw the dollar amount to your bank account, or do you need to convert it so it comes under your pounds sterling balance and then withdraw?

I deal in CAD but when I withdraw to my bank account I don't bother converting from USD I just go ahead and withdraw it, it transfers into CAD automatically.

Check your email inbox associated with the PayPal account. There should be a link to convert the currency to GBP.
I use the new PayPal account (my is USD) but when a GBP payment comes in, the pending amount is usually in a BIG BOLD text inside a rectangular banner, so it is hard to miss. Perhaps your GBP account is different?

I have the same problem since my account is in Brazilian Reais and HP sends the payments in USdollars. Someone explained how to convert the money in a previous forum. The information below is only copy and pasted--I did not write this and do not have the persons name who did.
"I had the same problem with my payment not converting to pounds with PayPal, so I phone them. The customer service rep was really nice and this is what he advise me to do: On your main account page, Click on Profile, then My Money, on the left hand side of the page that you will be, click Currencies or Currency, next  follow the instruction on the left side of the page by writing the amount that you want to convert in dollars, remember to enter from the drop down menu, which currency you are converting from and to. At the bottom, click the Convert box, and then click the Convert Currency box. Make sure that you see a message like, Your conversion was successful."
