   According to a 2006 police report, Joshua Duggar, the Duggar's oldest child, has been accused of hild molesting underage girls when he was a teenager.  As a result of the unearthed police report and the ensuing scandal, the show 19 Kids and Counting has been pulled and the show's future is up in the air. Joshua Duggar's scheduled speaking engagements to profamily, Christian, and other conservative groups have been cancelled in light of the accusations.   To many, the Duggar family represented the true Christian family who was unblemished by scandal.  What are your thoughts?

                  His wife, her name is Anna.  All the Duggar kids' names begin with a "j".   Strange family.  The Duggars epitomizes the insular, dysfunctional, fanatically religious, and/or large/very large family.   If one wants to study dysfunction for their abnormal psychology class,  study the Duggar family.  Ugh, this family sickens me(heaving as I speak)......

      I have never seen the show, though I've heard about it.  A long time ago, a classmate of mine told me the real reason why some religions prohibit birth control.  It is to enlarge their population.  She was a Catholic, and the number of whole countries that are Catholic support what she said.  Smaller religions, like Mormons and Sikhs, promote the same thing.  They glamorize these large families by teaching girls from Day One that it is their highest privilege - even their duty - to give birth and  care for children.
      When I first moved to the Big Island of Hawaii 14 years ago, I started listening to a Christian radio station, but was turned off by the fact that it played very little music; instead, it promoted the idea of "letting the Lord choose the size of your family".  Nothing was said about how the Lord would supply the emotional energy and finances to support such a large family.  One woman had 4 babies, one right after the other, and the couple wondered why she was tired all the time.
      Ultimately, it really is up to mankind to solve its problems.  Birth control has been around since antiquity, and people have discovered it is best to space their babies and limit their number to how many you can feasibly care for.  After all, what happens if the parents die?  Who will care for the babies then???
      Only a fool would fall for propaganda like this.

         Exactly, besides religious exhortation regarding the supposedly positivity of large families.  Not so long ago, many psychologists, educators, and social scientists proposed "the benefits" of the large/very large family.  It was purported that in such families, children learned to share, develop empathy, and social skills. They even believed that the large/very large families was the true family.  Well, thankfully times have changed.  Intelligent and educated people are having small families because such families have proven to be immensely beneficial for the children. 
         
         It is only the uneducated, illiterate, and unintelligent who are having large/very large families.  Even religious people are opting for small families.  Something has to be psychologically amiss for anyone to want large/very large families in this age of advanced contraception.  What these people are doing is inhumane.  God did not intend for children to be brought into the world in want, poverty, and struggle.  God gave us a brain to use contraception in order for children to be wanted, loved, and receive the best of parental time and attention.  Large/very large families are symbols of less enlightened/modern times.

      Probably.  The show 19 Kids and Counting is beyond disgusting.  It glorifies large/very large families which are detrimental to all parties involved, particularly children. The oldest daughters are little more than chattel slaves while the "mother" keeps cranking out kid after kid ad infinitum.

   I gotta tell ya, gm -- knowing how you feel about the Duggar clan, you were the first person I thought of when this news broke a day or two ago, i.e. "Ohhhh boy, gmwilliams is gonna have a field day with this!" Hahaha

      You're so right, FatFreddyCat.  When I first saw this, I thought old boy karma is a........................! The Duggars are dysfunctional beyond any type of logical belief but then so is the typical large/very large family but perhaps not to that extent.....Every large/very large family I have encountered from childhood on had some type of aberration and/or dysfunction: teenage pregnancies, juvenile delinquency, children raising themselves/each other, uninvolved parents/parents in name only, children being the adults in the family while parents are more like children, teen marriages- FatFreddyCat,NEED I SAY MORE-large/very large families exist in a world different from the rest of the normal population!

   I've never cared much for them but mostly just didn't pay attention to them/ignored them as best as I could.
   
   But this new information makes me absolutely despise the parents. Firstly because they didn't actually get the kid help, they spoke to the church and then they sent him away. A teenager who molests his siblings needs help in the form of actual therapy. They failed him, and most of all they failed their poor daughters who were the recipients of the abuse.
   
   Secondly, because the program they follow regarding sexuality and sexual abuse is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. They treat boys like they're animals incapable of resisting temptation and they treat girls like they're at fault when someone sexually abuses them. It's disgusting. No wonder this kid (and probably others) are maladjusted and have problems with their sexuality.
   
   And lastly (and this literally makes my blood pressure shoot up when I think about it), that these people have the balls to say that homosexuals pose a threat to children when they knew THE WHOLE TIME that their son had molested multiple children. It's just so, so abhorrent and hypocritical and I have absolutely zero sympathy for the parents. They screwed up, they're hypocrites, they subjected their kids to unhealthy views on sexuality, and they deserve every single bad comment aimed in their direction.
   
   The kids are a different story. I really, really feel for the girls who were abused. Just as I feel for anyone who is abused. But to live in such a repressive environment where you're led to believe that being sexually assaulted was even somewhat your own fault, and then to have your abuser simply sent away to live somewhere else for a few months and then be totally forgiven without a second thought because he was sorry, or he repented, or WHATEVER... I just can't imagine.
   
   I can't respect a guy who molested his very young sisters, I understand that he's owning up to it and that it was a long time ago, but 15 is old enough to know what you're doing in that situation. I might be a bit more sympathetic if he didn't participate heavily in a church that condemned other people for their sexuality. He, of all people, should not be judging anyone else on that topic.

   Grace......Have to admit that I'd not heard a word about this.  I guess I've paid little attention to the news the past few days.   I googled and read up on it just now. 
   Oops....just goes to show.....no person, no family, can possibly be flawless or living examples of "perfect," despite the herculean attempts to portray the role of  such a group. Perfection is nonexistent as we know.
   Jim Bob and Michele appear to be completely devoid of reality and common sense, as demonstrated with their insistence to continue to breed their own tribe......It's no secret that the vast majority of at least the American population see the Duggars as a bit looney and way off the charts.
   Basically, the only thing that prevents them from being totally ostracized and berated constantly is that they do support their massive brood on their own, without "OUR" assistance in any form.
   Actually Grace....this may just be the tip of the iceberg?   Who knows what skeletons lurk in the Duggar home?   
   I've never done any research on how MANY extra large families we have in our country.  I can't help but believe there are few......except perhaps for the terribly ignorant, poverty-stricken and unscrupulous......This begs the question, "Just what is the Duggar's excuse?".....Good post, Grace.

      As I have reiterated, there is something aberrant about large/very large families.  I have seen this aberration myself from childhood.  Large/very large families have a diametrical different psychology from the rest of us.  They also have a different mindset and consciousness.   Parents of large/very large families are seemingly devoid of any logic.  You are right fpherj48 that very few people have large/very large families. 
      
      Such people know that with large/very large families, there is a higher incidence of poverty and the pathologies that goes with it.  They also know that in large/very large families, older children are either cast aside, pressed into indentured servitude a/k/a slavery, and/or neglected altogether.  I have witnessed as a child how so many precious children in large/very large families suffer and endure conditions that would make POW and internment camps seem like paradise.
      
      Such children are on their own far too early, rising themselves and each other as their parents are parents in name only.  Yes, the Duggars are the atypical large family in that they support themselves.  However, the average large/very large family DOESN'T- they have to depend upon SOME TYPE of aid from more affluent relatives, charities, religious organizations, and of course, the government. 
      
      It is IRRESPONSIBLE and SELFISH to have large/very large families in this age of birth control.  Whew, I am digressing a bit.  Yes, the Duggar "parents" are strange.  They do not care about their children at all.  All they want to do is to quiver.  I find parents of large/very large families to have that incessant need to have children, regardless of the ramifications on the rest of the family.  This is narcissism at its highest order.  It is analogous to a 5 year child wanting a doll collection.
      
      Yes, many mothers of large/very large families want that doll collection.  Michelle Duggar is not the only one.  There is a Michigan mother Kateri Schwandt who has THIRTEEN sons THUS FAR.  She wants a.....DAUGHTER and will try again......again......and again until she gets that daughter.  There is something totally insane about this.
      
      Again, off on a verbal tangent.  I really can't wait to see what is really under the surface in the Duggar family.  Someone has informed me that there are so many pathologies in large/very large families.  Somehow large/very large families and abonormalites go hand in hand.  It is the POOR CHILDREN in large/very large families that I feel sorry for.  They have very little to no opportunities in life because of their "parents".  Birth control should be mandatory after 1-4 children. 
      
      P.S.  I have read books about large/very large families and its pathologies and studied it in college.  I also had parents who came from anaconda sized families i.e. very large families.   I have a branch of first cousins who came from large families plus a few classmates from large/very large families.  It is a WHOLE DIFFERENT world there.  To quote the series, Hell, the Devil's Domain- it is a place where one DEFINITELY DOESN'T want to go.........Same here with large/very large families- I definitely DON'T want to be there.......oh HELL to the NO!
