Have you ever had this happen? I added a poll to help prove my side. I hope I can trust reader not to go in and click the poll for their side of the argument a bunch.
Hub referring to is: http://hubpages.com/hub/Helping-Your-Fo … -Avoid-Gas
I think you handled the situation quite well. (And wrote a very informative hub.) Welcome to the online world of publishing with comments and polls. No you can't trust the reader not to try to manipulate the poll. One of the reasons why I don't like poll buttons and tend not to believe them.
I thought your article was informative. Honestly if I had been you I would have just deleted their rude comment. If they really did not like your hub they could write their own. I would not even make a poll acknowledging their comment, but that is my take on the issue.
Your article is fine, if a bit short. That person called you out because, as you admitted, you didn't include "over an extended period of time." I would just go include that, since you realized that was probably an important omission.
You can edit your hubs whenever you like. The point is to give good information. If someone points out a mistake in something, there's no shame in fixing it.
As for deleting his comment, I personally think that's a terrible idea. If you don't have the courage to stand by what you write and let the critics say what they want, then perhaps you need to look at what you wrote and ask yourself why it can't stand up to criticsm. Not to mention, nobody will respect you if you are one of those people who silences the voices of your opposition. That is weak-minded, imo.
Delete it if it's just spam selling something. Or if it's just vitriolic, profanity spew or something. Just my two cents on that. Censorship is weak. Don't do it.
I agree with Shadesbreath. Your article is too short anyway, so I think it would be a good idea to do what BS suggested, and add in the detail you gave in your reply. After all, BS was rude, but he/she has a point. Young mums get nervous enough without panicking them needlessly - some poor women will be measuring out their formula down to the last gram after reading your statement!
Oh, and one or two nice baby photos would round off your Hub nicely (you can probably find some on Flickr, do an Advanced Search and click on "creative commons" and "for commercial use", then you'll find photos you can use - all you have to do is thank the photographer in your Hub, and include a link to their Flickr Photostream).
You could also check on Youtube for clips on feeding babies.
I thought your article was informative and the comment made a good point. Honestly you wouldn't believe the comments some people leave on my hubs. I only remove them if they threaten violence (yes, I've had them--weirdly though, the threats were directed at other commenters) or if they are really profane and serve no purpose--like, just a string of cusswords. I also delete spam if the system hasn't winnowed it out automatically.
I would have just thanked the commenter and modified my text in the instance you gave, but I've also chosen to ignore comments without removing them. Every so often I'm moved to write about something I feel strongly about, and I recognize that a certain percentage of people are going to leave negative commentary and that's just the way it is. If a comment is overly personal I leave it stand but in most cases I don't respond. I mean, it just gets stupid, "You're a doodyhead," and then "No you are," and so forth.
Deleting comments actually can be a strong thing in my view. It is not about censorship, but rather taking control of your page. People have the right to produce their own hub on any topic at any given moment of the day, and not all comments are equal. Personally I could care less if someone thinks I am weak for deleting certain comments because I actually probably think the same thing about people who think that about me.
No actually I do not think that either, but the more and more I live the more I see there are just way too many control freaks in the world. It is one thing to express your opinion, but some people are just way too nasty about it. It is okay to acknowledge the comment if you wish and fix the error, but never feel obligated to live by rules other people set for you. Feel free to delete comments without worry I say .
You know I'm really struggling with this to tell you the truth. I'm kind of sick of writing online lately because so many people are just dicks for no reason. It's getting so I can't write anything without half a dozen people showing up to say "You're an idiot." I mean, wow, thanks, you know? What's wrong with people?
I'm not talking about people who just disagree. People are going to disagree and that's just life. I mean the people who seem to get off on being rude pricks for no special reason, just haven't got anything better to do and don't want to put the effort into writing their own stuff--they'd rather just cruise around and be pricks in commentary on other people's stuff.
You have been at this longer than I have but I think the thing to remember is that people are generally stupid and the unintelligent once are the people that say stuff like that. I think it is mainly jealosy or whatever but you have the upper hand, you actually have the intelligence to write something worthwhile. Keep the faith and stay strong.
Isn't it a little egotistical to delete only the comments apposing your views?....Isn't that kinda like being a control freak?
well, you two seemed to mostly resolve the situation amongst yourselves. I do think he was rude to begin with but when you're writing an article, semantics really is an important part, so in arguing semantics, I think an article mostly improves. I certainly didn't think you were indicating that by watering down a single bottle a parent may doom a child to brain damage, but the devil is in the details as they say. I think you handled the situation well, and that both of you had vaild points. Sometimes that happens, even if someones being a jerk.
you guys, Im not really a prude or into censorship and all, but why is that pic like that? holy cow, thought that wasnt allowed? its the only reason I dont worry about if my kids are in the room.....
You mean they never saw yours?
But yeah, it's not allowed here and will disappear as soon as Maddie comes to work.
Oh cool , so HP is fair game for offensive material until the office opens too funny
That picture was pretty tame compared to some of the other ones people posted lol.
I think that the poster was unnecessarily abrupt, and a bit rude. But I also think he has a point - an anxious mother could read your hub as suggesting that a feed or two without quite enough formula in it could cause brain damage.

When I started on hubpages I used to reply to every comment, and I still appreciate them as much as I used to...But is there a point when it becomes unneccessary to reply to comments? I think that its great when people reply to every one of their commenters, I really do, people like Sufidreamer...

Is it rude to point out grammar/spelling mistakes on hubs via comments?I've come across numerous hubs that have grammar and spelling errors, some minor and some littered with mistakes. Otherwise, these hubs would be interesting and will written in my opinion. Is it rude to point out these mistakes...

That's the way of the internet. Google isn't the be-all end-all of the internet, and I'm kind of glad I spent a lot of time rarely posting on the forums because there is so much worry about Google this and Google that. Yeah, I know it did cause a big hit, but that's why you gotta be a hustler. Keep...

As writers, we have received our share of dissenting comments on our hubs which is well and good. However, there are comments which are completely rude and disrespectful. Such comments include personal attacks on the hub author. While disagreement is fine and acceptable, being...

Have you encountered a not-so-friendly hubber? How did you deal with him/her?I know there are a lot of awesome people here. But there are still times when we encounter hubbers who are a bit rude. What's your experience?
