There are some great ones out there, perhaps Atomswifey could clarify this simple one:

EXO 15:3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.

ROM 15:33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

So, is god a god of war or a god of piece? I have always had the impression that he is supposed to be peaceful. Does he have an alter ego? Or have you all got it wrong?..... maybe there is a god of war and a god of peace? I take it that the American Right have taken the first statement as correct.

    God cannot tempt anybody?

James 1:13- Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

    Oh yes he can.....

Genesis 22:1-  And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

And Jesus asks him to do it:

Matthew 6:13- And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Baasha died in the 27th year of Asa's reign!

1 Kings 15:33-  In the third year of Asa king of Judah began Baasha the son of Ahijah to reign over all Israel in Tirzah, twenty and four years

But then Baasha came against Judah AND built Ramah 9 years after he died!

2 Chronicles 16:1-  In the six and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa Baasha king of Israel came up against Judah, and built Ramah, to the intent that he might let none go out or come in to Asa king of Judah.

1 Chronicles 21:12- Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

2 Samuel 24:13-  So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

What a crock of old shit. Im not having a dig at believers, I am having a dig at people that live there lives word for word on this book. I dont see JK Rowling contradicting herself.

So which side of God are you on? Is He your friend or foe?
You seem to not follow Him, so I can only assume "foe". hmm

Damn. I forgot this way. What you can also do is change the words to suit. Where it says man of war - you change that to "foe." and where it says "god of peace," you change that to "friend." lol

The first statement said that God is a man of war. The second statement said that god is a man of peace. Now, John Lennon was a man of peace, Hitler was a man of war. So what is he? Is he Hitler or is he John Lennon?

Wrong? I don't know. It depends on your moral code I guess. My personal code does not allow me to lie and use semantics to make a point. Yours does - seeing as you are a christian. The question of right or wrong is moot. It is part of the reason I came to the conclusion that there is no christian god though.

No - you are the one applying moral standards to a scientific theory. I have never done that - nor would I. Like I said - using semantics and lying is against my personal code of ethics.

I will have to tell the truth from now on.
But, since truth seems to be relative these days ( as a standard modus operandi), can I really be a LIAR?

As you invited me to "clarify" I will.

God is both. He is a God of war and A God of peace. He is righteously perfect in both.

Temptation has many synonyms (equivalent words) in English. It can mean (among other things) test, proof, experiment, trial, and enticement. The main Greek (New Testament language) words for temptation are formed from peiraz and dokimaz

From this vocabulary study, we see that "temptation" can mean test, proof, or to establish genuineness; not only "enticement to sin."

      God Cannot Be Tempted:
James 1:13 "Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am being tempted by God'; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone." Looking at the context, we see that the statement is not merely "God cannot be tempted," but "God cannot be tempted by evil." In other words, God cannot be enticed to sin (Greek apeir st s). James 1:13 affirms that God cannot sin, but is completely holy and good.

      God Can Be Tempted:
When Deuteronomy 6:16 warns us against "tempting God," the context refers on the one hand to testing the Israelites' faithfulness and, on the other hand, to testing God's righteous judgment. Paraphrased, the passage means, "Don't test God's righteous judgment by worship-ping idols unless you are willing to be wiped off the face of the earth" (verse 15).
The reconciliation of the two statements? God cannot be enticed to sin, He is holy and good. God's consistent, holy, good reaction to idolatry is righteous judgment. One should not "test" God's character by sinning, since God will "pass the test" of righteousness and punish the sinner (see also Jeremiah 18:7-10).

      Does God Tempt People?
Look again at James 1:13. Just as God cannot be enticed into sinning, so God does not entice anyone else into sinning. That is what is meant by "and He Himself does not tempt anyone." James warns us not to blame our own fall into sin on God. God does not persuade us to sin, we willingly fall to the lure of our own sinful nature (Romans 3:23), the sinfulness in the world (Titus 2:12), and/or the false promises of Satan (Genesis 3:1-5).
When 2 Samuel 24:1 says God provoked or tempted David to number Israel, it means God made use of David's action to manifest David's disobedience to God. The parallel passage in 1 Chronicles 27:23-24 credits Satan with provoking David to take the census. Putting the two passages together shows that, while Satan may have enticed David into sin, it was God who tested David and used that occasion to show both David and the Israelites the consequences of David's sin.

God tests us to reveal to ourselves and the world our true characters.

1KI 16:6-8 Baasha died in the 26th year of King Asa's reign.
      2CH 16:1
      Baasha:
In Jewish tradition there was no provision for a queen.  Here, the queen-mother, Maachah, takes on an important role when her son Abijam dies after reigning only 3 years.  She adopts one of his sons Asa (I Kings 15:10) apparently as a figure-head and actually reigns herself for the first 10 years (see II Chronicles 14:2).  After this period, Asa wins a great battle, is encouraged by the prophet in chapter 15, and takes over.  He cleans the idols out of Judah AND Benjamin (as noted above) and removes the idolatrous Maachah as queen (I Kings 15:13 and II Chronicles 15:16).  Likely this ten-year reign of the Queen mother alongside Asa is the reason for the ten-year discrepancy in dating the Baasha event by how long Asa had ruled.

Why can the KJV and Hebrew use differing words to tell of an event but another version is considered "in error" when it does the same thing?
Such as with the "contradictions" you cite between 1 Chronicles 21:12 & 2 Samuel 24:13 and the different Bible's they are taught in.

OK lets examine this for a minute shall we?
Differences in what was spoken by Gad 2 Samuel 24:13 (KJV)& 1 Chronicles 21:12 (KJV)
"famine come unto thee in thy land?" (2 Sam)
      "famine" (1 chron)
      "before thine enemies" (2Sam)
"destroyed before thy foes" (1 Chron)
"while they pursue thee" (2 sam)
"while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee"(1 chron)
      "three days' pestilence" (2 Sam)
"three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence" (1 chron)
      [not preset] (2 Sam)
"and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel" (1 chron)
"now advise, and see" (2 Sam)
"Now therefore advise thyself" (1 chron)
"what answer I shall return" (2 Sam)
"what word I shall bring again" (1 chron)
Choices worded as questions (2 Sam)
Choices worded as a list (not questions)(2 chron)

      And too,
Hebrew manuscripts and the Masoretic [Hebrew] Text offer seven years of famine in 2 Sam 24:13. Other Hebrew manuscript evidence more recently discovered having three, the 1 Chronicle text being considered as better preserved, the Septuagint which has three, the symmetry of the three punishments all being three years and the easy possibility of mistaking the Hebrew character 3 for 7 lead to the resolution of this alleged contradiction as three instead of seven years in 2 Sam 24:13. This is reflected in some well received translations such as the NIV.
I happen to study in the NIV btw as well as the KJV

So I hope that helped to clarify those things for you smile

Oooo, wait a minute, I know I know.

Here is how you pretend there are no glaring contradictions in the bible:

What you do is - you use "scripture to interpret scripture."

So, for example  where it says

James 1:13- Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

    and

Genesis 22:1-  And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

What you need to do is pick the one that you want to use and say - 'well, this is not a contradiction. Using "scripture to interpret scripture," we can see that god IS able to tempt and we can ignore the other one.'

Easy - they do it all the time. You can make it say anything you want.

LOL. I think the word "interpret" is the root problem. Everybody gets to "interpret" the scriptures, apparently. Reading them seems to be just too ordinary and impossible. Thus rape, murder and plunder are all justified, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

      1. Mark Knowles profile image59
Mark Knowlesposted 14 years agoin reply to this

I agree. The problem is - it was written 2,000 years ago and then mis-translated, added to, taken away from, etc. I have an original KJ version and it was clearly written to keep the peasants in line.

It is no longer relevant. If it ever was. Which means you must interpret it. As you have always had to do. Which means it says what you (and I do not mean just you personally) want it to. Therefore it is worthless. A quick look through any history book will show that we have been fighting over this for 1500 years.

Time to ditch it and start accepting some responsibility for ourselves. The very second you start thinking you are speaking for a god is the very second your ability to make rational decisions goes out of the window.

But that leaves people like AW powerless. She is unable to think for herself and has no "authority," unless she is shouting bible verses.

I wonder if she is that obnoxious in real life? lol

You laugh, but I come from a family with a fairly rich oral tradition. Any written records of some of the stories are very old and very limited. Towns where certain events took place no longer exist or were absorbed by larger cities nearby. Some of the details become more exaggerated or downplayed in the retelling. Most of the stories can't be verified, as there are no living eyewitnesses, but the gist of all the stories and the lessons that can be learned from them, with which I have no reason to quarrel, have remained the same over the generations.

Then note that I did not say all scripture began as oral tradition. Just some.

One has to remember that the Bible was written by more than one author which accounts for some of the inconsistancies.  I guess they weren't into having an editor back then. smile  Also other than having multiple authors, some sections were written 25 years later and some written over a 100 after the death of Christ (don't remember the exact years).  Then you have some early Christain texts that were never included for some reason or other.  Usually considered heretical given what was going on religously, politically, etc.  I am not religous but the Bible is a great piece of written stories with valuable lessons and some factual history.  Though I have read many of the other text that were never included which for me makes that whole period a lot more interesting historically and theoretically.

But with all due respect, if God is the Word, and he is consistent, he should have inspired all these writers to be consistent, no?

This is a response to mkott, couldnt find his post to quote? Anyway, I actually AGREE that the bible is a fantastic book of wisdom, with some very entertaining and enjoyable parts. I am not being critical of error or contradiction, I am being critical of those that live their lives from that book; using it as a 24/7 instruction manual, whilst being in complete denial about its inaccuracies.

A complete lack of discrepancies indicates collusion or tampering with the testimony of independent witnesses.

Also, the Bible wouldn't make for as exciting an anthology without the variety of literature included in it.

Finally, I understand how there doesn't have to be any contradiction between being peaceful and being a warrior. To prefer to bring peace but to also be willing and able deal with conflict however and only if it's necessary is a godly characteristic not just according to the monotheistic faiths. It is considered beneficial in Shinto and some Buddhist traditions.

Very good points, indeed. But for me personally, it's all too broad and leaves a remarkable number of loopholes and escape points so that no one can really be tacked down to a specific thing. Murder/forgive-let live. Rape/sexual abstinence, etc., etc. It's all there and it's all justified. Just depends on the interpreter, which in our day, I think are clergy. Thus so many sects.

I guess I can see this broad thinking in a case by case basis, but if that's so, then why were there commandments given that should apply in all instances? I'm making a rhetorical comment, really. Not asking for an answer.

Still not adding up for me.

Seems that the Bible is a set of writings about an awareness of who God is, but that awareness is highly individualized and convoluted with much self justification per circumstance.

Actually, rape and murder are never justified in the Bible, and all come with penalties. There may be forgiveness of sins, but forgiveness doesn't mean a complete suspension or removal of temporal consequences.

And to be perfectly fair, I admit that I called Mark "Grendel." Probably shouldn't have done that, particularly since he and I might get on much better if we stuck with discussing a less hot-button topic- like gazpacho. (Having that for lunch, and loving it!)

        my sediments exactly (deliberate malapropism).

if the Holy Bible is indeed the Word of God, then these 'writers' were not writers at all, but transcribers of His Word, putting it down in some medium so that it could be shared with the world. since word processors, tape recorders or even dictaphones didn't exist yet, God used these people to 'get The Word' out, so to speak.

which forces bibliophiles to find some other reason to account for the numerous, glaring inconsitencies in the Bible, instead of blaming it on human error.

of course it would have been much easier if God would have just caused gigantic HD telescreens to appear all over the world, broadcasting his commandments, parables, lessons and whatnot. he is the Almighty and can do anything. or he could have even used a less-glamorous approach and simply abracadabra'd a bible in every dwelling in the world, and maybe put a glowing autograph in each one, and made it of some indestructable material, with pictures in it that moved and talked.

that would certainly convince anyone that this was the work of God Almighty.

Oh ok I get it, they were fed to the lions because they hated Christians. Now, why hasn't white Christian middle America learnt to stop persecuting athiests and liberals? I have driven through three states in America without being able to buy an alcoholic drink. The first time I ever heard the word 'wine' was at Sunday school. Would Jesus be a bit pissed off if he was resurected in America and couldnt get a glass of red?

Coming back to Roman times, I do think Senkevich likely was right and that period was awful for Christians. but then they got a revenge in middle ages, with crusades, witch hunting, and such. On balance I would guess they killed and tortured way more people than they suffered themselves, but don't take my word for it, I did not really do any serious research on the matter. smile

You would hit each other in the hands, with fists, 'till you both were bleeding, and somebody had to "cry uncle". whoever did not cry uncle, was the winner. Its just a thing, about not giving up. If you cry uncle, it means your done. the other person is either winning, or unreasonable, beyond belief. I also think it has to do with another thread.

The persecution of Christians as of most other religious groups is actually quite well-documented- in the case of Christians, dating back as far as the first century AD/CE Roman Empire.

You also tried to bring up several other points not related to that at all which I tried to address.

And it seems you ignored the point I made that claiming to follow a religion is not the same as actually following it. Real religious devotion is proven by whether or not. The Qu'ran prohibits murder and suicide. Therefore anyone who believes murder and suicide is commendable as opposed to condemnable is not following the Qu'ran. The New Testament makes it clear that the Jews hold a very special place in salvation history. It also maintains strict prohibitions not only against murder and suicide, but even of entertaining murderous thoughts. So anyone who thinks it's okay to murder Jews and then kill himself obviously is not in agreement with Christianity, no matter what he says.

"Faith without works is dead." Anyone can flap their jaws about faith, but it doesn't mean a thing. Actions prove it.

LK 2:22-40 Following the birth of Jesus, Joseph and Mary remain in the area of Jerusalem for the Presentation (about forty days) and then return to Nazareth without ever going to Egypt. There is no slaughter of the infants.

MT 2:23 "And he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: He will be called a Nazarene.'" (This prophecy is not found in the OT and while Jesus is often referred to as "Jesus of Nazareth", he is seldom referred to as "Jesus the Nazarene.")

I'm going to begin with simply stating the fact that most Christians do not believe that all the writers of the Bible took dictation directly from God. I will also reiterate that most of the "contradictions" you pointed out, Cosette, are not contradictions but problems that arise when you take verses out of context and apply a literalist interpretation (again, most Christians are not Biblical literalists)to them.

Some of the prophets are believed to have taken dictation from God, true, but the language they use is rife with symbolism. The others were rather inspired by God to collect proverbs, write poetry, preserve stories that had been handed down over the generations, teach and encourage, and sometimes write their account of an actual event.

Among the Apostles, the Judases were Judas Iscariot and (as he's known in Catholic and Orthdox tradition) Jude Thaddeus.

And "the Lord" is actually a mistranslation of YHWH. It's a title, not the name itself. The Hebrew word for Lord or Master is transliterated as Adonai. So no contradiction there.

I’ve used some of your points many times Valerie.  Like the "it’s not dictation from God”, and the Bible, per religious scholars, is for the most part, a collection of history, literature and culture of the Hebrew people.  These points to my homophobic, racist, Christian, Southern relatives, who look at me like I have 3 heads.

      Peace.

GA 6:5 Bear your own burden.
If I bear my own burden then I am not a burden to others.

GA 6:2 Bear one another's burdens.
If someone has a burden, like a child or a widow or orphan, I am suppose to help them bear their burdens but, I could not do that if I was not keeping my own life straight.

Christ said this too, "he who does not work does not eat"
So if one is not willing to work, they do not eat.

If they cannot find work, give them something to do and if they do it, feed them. Like I do if I see someone who asked for money for food,  I say "let's go across the street to the self service car wash and you help me wash my car, then I will give you money for food for 2 days or a week depended on your work"

They say, no it's easier to wait for people to just give me money.
Christ did not believe in free welfare for lazy people.

I do not even know you, nor do you know me. People have done a lot of nasty things for a lot of causes, but I do not say evil about anyone without a cause right off the bat with out knowing them. No way. sad

People have done a lot of evil in the name of their country too, but I do not hate their country for it.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE ALL TOOK THE BIBLE LITERALLY...

Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a US radio personality who dispenses advice to
people who call in to her radio show.  Recently, she said that, as an
observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to
Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The
following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a US resident, Jim, which
was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:

    Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have
learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as
many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle,
for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to
be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however,
regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them.

    1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a
pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev.1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They
claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

    2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus
21:7.  In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

    3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her
period of menstrual cleanliness (Lev.15:19-24). The problem is, how do I
tell?  I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

    4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female,
provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine
claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify?
    Why can't I own Canadians?

    5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath.  Exodus clearly
states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

    6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an
abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality.  I
don't agree. Can you settle this?

    7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a
defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my
vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

    8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around
their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How
    should they die?

    9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me
unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

    10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different
crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two
different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse
and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of
getting the whole town together to stone them?  (Lev.24:10-16). Couldn't we
just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people
who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can
help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and
    unchanging.

    Your devoted fan,
    Jim

Hope you get a good laugh at this Everyone!

me too. i think the very length of the post made an excellent point in and of itself smile

that is a classic comeback. i will accept that there are some things in the Bible that are not to be taken literally, and there are many things in the Bible that are symbolic, such as the length of a day - to humans, that is 24 hours long. to God, it can be years. i find it hard to fathom that every single one of those verses is figurative or symbolic.

so, if God would make a book, which is his word, so confusing, so cryptic, why write a Bible at all? the world is full of all kinds of people from all walks of life...some can interpret the esoteric, some are very simple people who are unable to do so. and why be so clear and specific about the ten commandments? why are those widely accepted and taught as LITERAL things, and other things, when pointed out as inconsistent, said to be 'figurative' or 'symbolic'?

    thank you

    right on!
