Geek, Nerd, or Dork...which one are you?

Alright there seems to be some confusion over these three terms and most people (especially those that poke fun) tend to interchange them! But there are slight differences in each...of course, that does not mean one can't crossover into another term...(example a nerdy, geek)

A nerd is usually someone who is extremely smart, or a bookworm. They usually know a lot about a specific subject such as mathematics, the sciences, or chess. They are usually very logical and their decisions are very calculated.

A dork is someone who is socially unacceptable. They dress wrong for the occasion, they wear 2 different pairs of socks, their clothes don't match, and they may smell. They are just socially inept, in every possible way.

A geek is someone who loves a certain hobby (usually out of the ordinary) and is very knowledgeable about it. Hobbies such as Science Fiction (more specifically Star Wars or Star Trek), Fantasy (a.k.a. Lord of the Rings), computer programming/graphics, or loves comic books.

Now, I'm a geek! And proud!

    What are you?

If you were to expand on this, and add some illustrations and photos, it would make for a very interesting hub.

wyanjenposted 14 years agoin reply to this

        Yes, it would! wink
Expand the geek section to include the geek sub-sets though. Star Wars fans and Star Trek fans are two very distinct groups.

Yes, I'd very much like to read a hub like that.

I think secretly most Trek fans like Star Wars. In fact, I'm not sure how a Trek fan can't like Wars. "It's impossible!"

I'm a fan of both, by the way.

I've had many an argument with my trekkie friend.
We will never see eye to eye.

His argument is that Trek has correctly predicted many future scientific advancements, and that Wars is nothing more than a fairy tale.

My argument is that Trek has no soul.
I like my imaginary future universe to be battered and dirty. lol

We are known as the PC Nerd and the Mac Nerd.

I suppose I would be classified as a nerd, since I am something of a book worm, however I suck at math. Not a geek, for sure. And I don't think I would fit into the nerd catergory.... so ya, a nerd, a very pretty nerd big_smile

Well, I am not a person that bites heads off of chickens so I'm not a geek.

    I also am not a whale's d*ck so I am not a dork.

I guess this only leaves one possibility.  I'll be a nerd, thats fine with me.

I'm a nerd, but I'm usually wearing the wrong outfit wherever I am.

But I don't smell lol so I'm out of the dork category.

I am nerdy enough to know the etymology of the word "dork," yes. However, like with many other words, the meaning has changed as it was adopted by people who didn't speak the word's original language.

I think in another lifetime I would be a nerd. Right now, I'm just too lazy for all that nonsense! Though, I do find some of the 'nerdy' stuff interesting. Hell, I'm a Trek fan.

Think of it as our own technology blazing the trail towards Trek tech.  They're trying to discover the particle that links matter and gravity right now (so they can change the relationship... weightless anyone?).  I don't know why I find it so interesting.  Our universe is a very incredible thing.

I believe I am a hybrid of many things.
While I am extremely smart, or a bookworm I DO have many other interests.  I also enjoy Star trek and comic books but not to the extreme that I would dress in costume or risk a job to see an opening of a movie.
Plus, I am given the impression that none of these types get any p*ssy and I do indeed get p*ssy.
So I am not sure what that makes me.

The word geek ----- is a slang term, noting individuals as "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc

dork ---- USA pejorative slang for a quirky, silly and/or stupid, socially inept person, or one who is out of touch with contemporary trends. Often confused with nerd and geek, but does not imply the same intelligence level.

Nerd is a term often bearing a derogatory connotation or stereotype, that refers to a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests that are age-inappropriate rather than engaging in more social or popular activities.
