where can I find free pictures online?

   Hey hubbers Can anyone point me to some good places to get good free pictures I can use on my hubs. I am looking for pictures of Argentina and the Dirty War etc and am having little luck on the site I use. Thanks!

   Pictures are the easiest thing to take and the hardest thing to lawfully charge against anyone. Why you ask? Because, simple put - any image file is unreadable by search engines. There are millions..billions of photos and other kinds of images on the internet simply labeled and called "1". Not only that, but in all jurisdictions, if you aren't using the image to profit directly (selling of a reproduction, putting on apparel, etc) then 99.9% of the time they just ask the image to not be used on your site.(saying they can contact you)

         I would say its best to take it from a military point of view, applying a "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy about that.

            Thranax, I'm surprised at you.  Do you take the same attitude when people steal your writing? 
            
            My view is, a photographer is a creative artist, same as me. I would no more steal their work than I would steal your articles.
            
            I don't care whether other people do it - two wrongs don't make a right.

      I will personally take the boots from you have you in court very quickly and any decent photorapher will do the same - we take a lot of time,effort and investment in equipment and you are going to steal my images - dream on. We have imbedded code in our digital images and if we catch you get your wallet out.

      You do know, that taking images off random sites from a google search is breaking copyright correct.
      
      I would say its best to take it from a military point of view, applying a "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy about that.

      You've picked "noncommercial" as an attribute in this search - if you're going to use them in a Hub, that's commercial use.

            Thanks Perfumer, it didn't look like that when I clicked on a couple of the images at random. However,I now realize what happened.
            
            I didn't even know that Google search existed.  Now I've tried it,I don't like it.  Google isn't guaranteeing that all the images are definitely available for commercial reuse.  They're just going by the "label" provided by the site, whatever that means. 
            
            I looked at some of the images and there's no indication one way or the other.  So the onus is still on you to contact the website owner and make sure the image is OK to use.
            
            As Stillthinking says, that's why I prefer Flickr because it's all clearly stated, no confusion.

   I only use images that are under creative commons license and always attribute the image back to the source.
   
   Flickr is great for this as it clearly states whether all rights are reserved or creative commons.  If it is a reserved image, then I write to the photographer or artist, tell them what it's for and then ask for permission.
   
   As far as video on my blog, I do not post it unless it is from a legitimate source, such as the original website that created it or from a legitimate news source.

   I don't normally give this site name out but I'm going to because I can't, in good conscience let MissAlyssa get into trouble using copyrighted images.  Besides, my niece's name is Alyssa.

   No attribution required at all.  The images are public domain but check just below each image that you enlarge to look at, just to double check.  Apparently, there is the odd one on the site that is licensed differently.
   
   They don't have all categories of pics.  I think they are photos that people have donated but like I said, no attribution required.

    Shirley, morguefile is good but doesn't always have a wide range of subjects.  That's why I like Flickr because it covers such a lot of ground.

       Agreed.  Sometimes I use a photo that isn't exactly what I had in mind because morguefile doesn't have it.  I don't think that their pictures are always taken with a professional slant in mind.  What I like most about them is their generous allowance of free, unattributed use.  I like to give photographers their dues and that's fine on HP but doesn't work in every venue.  I find freephoto to be the same type of thing.
       
       I really like fontplay, too.  Same deal as morguefile.  Unfortunately, they don't have a wide variety and there's no search.  Their photos are beautifully clear and very colourful.
       
       I've looked at Flickr but not used them yet.

             Yes, I'm not happily hanging out in the forums as much as I used to.  The need to make money has sort of keep me busy elsewhere.

                      I don't know, there are times that I'm expecting it to rise to 99 or 100 after publishing a series of quality hubs but I't didnt, its an irony hehehe when the least I expect it, 99 will just pop up from elsewhere...

    A brief note on the subject of casual copyright infringement.
    
    I used an image randomly culled from Google images or somewhere similar a few years back. The copyright owner traced me and to cut a long story short it cost me £450 (about $700) for one single image, used once on a web site.
    
    Suffice to say that nowadays I buy all my images the proper way. http://www.istockphoto.com/ is a good site where they only cost a few pennies each.
    
    Photographers need to make a living too, so good luck if you get caught stealing.
