How can a hubber become Hubpages elite? What are the functions of a hubpages elite apart from publishing hubs and being active in the forum? What are benefits of being a Hubpages Elite?

There are no benefits. The only reward is animosity from the disgruntled members who lean towards being jealous in nature.

But on a serious note, the majority of "Elite" members didn't sign up to be recognised as elite. They volunteered to do community work because it seemed like the right thing to do. The E symbol came much later.

Given the dislike of the "e", they might get more volunteers if they dropped it - or made displaying it optional.

Ever since the introduction of the "e" they've had plenty more interest in people wanting to volunteer.

I also think HP discovered that they can't please everyone.

They could if they made displaying it optional smile

Very well put.  One of the reasons I retired my "e".

And you've retired the monkey sad

Some of my favourite forum moments involves that monkey. Happy cymbal clapping monkey gives wise gentle advice to newbie and newbie completely misinterprets the advice and has a meltdown. How many times did that happen? smile

You're a stand-out here at HP. And even without the E you're Excellent, Exceptional and Extremelyfabulous.

Now I know it's not just I who feels this way. That monkey was for me a symbol of experience and helpfulness. Therefore I rather dislike anything other than that monkey on KCC Big Country.

A friendly face... a light at the end of the tunnel... a beacon of light on the horizon.

              I miss the monkey.

LOL.....I think newbies saw the monkey as some evil creature from hell.  You and I went through at least a half dozen of those meltdowns where I'm left standing with my jaw wide open wondering what the hell just happened.  Some really crazy stuff.

I'm really flattered that you've found some good things the "e" might stand for.  You've made my day.  Thank you.

Regarding the monkey.....my family has been on me for a long time to get rid of it.  Some of you may not have realized there was a story behind the monkey that involved the death of my father.  I discovered HubPages only a month after his death...in fact...exactly one month after his death.  I have a hub about it if anyone is interested.  Look up "clapping monkey" in the hubs and you'll probably find it.  My family thought it was time to retire the monkey since he's now been dead for 2 years.  They also felt I needed a more feminine avatar since most seemed to think I was a male.  It was also thought that I might be taken more seriously with something other than a monkey.  Who knows?  I can say that I've had back to back record-breaking months for Adsense since changing it.  Before the day is out I will have already made more this month than I did last month and last month was my all time best.  Perhaps I'll bring the monkey back from time to time....but for now.....you'll have to deal with the one-eyed chick.

I'd giggle at the response. Your words were chosen carefully and maybe even edited for clarity. But never have I see such a response, and not once, or twice, but more times than I care to admit.

Usually that kind of blunt over reactive response was reserved for the very short replies myself or Relache would give. A looooong question that needed nothing more than a yes or no answer. Which we'd give, and then their nose would be out of joint.

There's just no pleasing some people. big_smile

That's understandable. The clapping monkey did something... I'm not sure if filled a void is the word for it. But it was doing something. But now you've found closure. So if the monkey doesn't return that's fine and completely understandable.

It's funny how we tend to recognise the avatar before we notice the username. It becomes our calling card. I had a close up of MY eye once, but a few people thought I was a hot chick with an attitude.

I remember that avatar.  I loved it! How in the world did anyone think it was a female? But hey, I would think hot chicks with attitudes could be a plus sometimes.  smile

Funny but I can't remember how I got to be included in it. Truly, I forget. I didn't apply. And Darkside's correct - I was helping out a little way before the 'e' appeared and when it did, I needed it pointing out.

Don't do it expecting any special treatment, you wont get it. We still follow the same rules and know exactly the same about how the site works as you or anyone else - despite popular belief to the contrary.

Ditto, ditto. I think it was Ryan Hupfer, ex-HP staffer, who volunteered me, I mean, asked me to help out. smile Several months later I log in and there's a little "e" thingee on my avatar. Took me a while to figure out what it was for. I just thought my kids had informed him that they had been instructed to call me the Empress of Everything. smile

I miss the monkey, too, but change can be good...just wanted to chime in here that the 'e' means work, putting yourself out there, if you will!

I could do that....LOL     (Look at you with that 100 score!!  Way to go!  You seem to see that quite often these days, huh?)  I haven't seen it in a long time.  I got close a couple of weeks ago...I had 99 for a few hours.  LOL)

Deary me - and I was thinking of retiring my avatar. Seems us hanimals are an endangered species lol

As for the $1000 Amazon gift bonus well - I'm not greedy. HP? Can I just have a Kindle please? That's only $140 and you can give the other $860 gift voucher to the first hubber that comes up with an answer to the following question: What is a frogdropping?

That true about your earnings KCC? Not that I'm suggesting you're untruthful, more related to maybe I should drop mine. Though being honest, it's the name too. Utterly silly. Mine I mean smile

@wrylilt - good try. Potential winner but for the yukky graphic explanation. I almost brought my coffee up tongue

Absolutely the truth.  However, I really don't attribute it to the change in my avatar.  I'd like to think it's my highly successful seasonal hubs.  I have a couple from last year that have really ripened up nicely this year.

These days, anyone can volunteer to become an Elite if he or she would like big_smile

When someone requests to become a greeter, we review them and based on these criteria...

-Minimum of six months’ worth of experience as a hubber
-Compliance with HubPages’ terms of service (no infractions for six months)
-Friendly behavior in communications on HubPages.com and off the site with regards to HubPages matters
    -High quality, original hubs
    -Excellent written English
    -A Hubscore over 80

... either onboard them or ask them to apply again when whatever it is about their account that does not meet our criteria has changed!
