   I think it is a wonderful idea - but it is so hard to get the child to commit without them getting resentful when made to practice.  It doesn't mean much to a child to tell them they will be glad when they are older that they learned.  So I never forced the kids beyond a few piano lessons.

   It helps build discipline and fosters the love for the arts.  Moreover, it helps with their creativity.  But I agree with duffsmom, forcing kids to learn and practice can be counterproductive.

   I think that it's important to expose children to a variety of things, including music.  Ideally, a child should, at first, have musical instruments around, to experiment with and play -- without the "forced structure" of musical lessons.  You can start with things like a small keyboard, a drum, a xylophone, some rhythm choices - or maybe a small guitar or ukelele.  It doesn't have to be expensive - especially not at first. I used to include something musical as one of the Christmas gifts.  With this kind of exposure, hopefully the child can make a decision him/herself, whether or not to pursue music lessons.

   Right now, my girls are wrapping-up sports activities & I'm looking to the next extra-curricular. They've been doing sports, following the older boys in the family. Now, I'd like them to switch gears.
   I think it is important to expose children to all sorts of activities and for them to develop varied skills and talents. EXPOSURE, I believe is one key to learning to seek a fulfilling lifestyle. Music touches the soul, it reaches places you can't get to by yourself. If you never pick up an instrument, you can't discover the wee small places within your spirit that will connect you to the source of all creativity, God.
   I took piano lessons as a child. When I played, sometimes I would enter the "zone". For me, in those moments, I was all alone, just me and the music. I was transported away from my problems, my fears, my doubts and anyone's expectations. How important is that? How much is it worth?

   I think it is very important.  However if the child is not committed, it will not work out as desired.  Learning how to play a musical instrument as a small child, helps in learning math and provides an affection for the arts and creativity.  I went to music lessons when I was a small child.  I learned how to play the piano but I was not committed until much later, and then I did not have near enough time to practice and excellerate my skill.

    Undoubtedly there are huge benefits from learning to play a musical instrument at any age and especially as a child but definitely something that they should be encouraged to do rather than compelled. If there is no interest from the child then it is a fruitless task. Playing a musical instrument is always something that should be a pleasure.
    I personally learnt to play recorder and flute when at school but lost interest after a few years. When the interest reignited some years later the background knowledge I had in music made learning violin so much easier picking up the violin and I have gone on to make great progress. My interest has exploded and now I have become a collector of violins (see www.virtuosiviolins.com). Yes, I sometimes wish that I could have had the opportunity to learn the violin when I was at school (coupled with the desire for it that I now have) as I could have been so much better at playing had I started back then AND stuck at it. However, had I been forced into playing a musical instrument as a child I am quite sure that I would not now be playing violin.
    As to the importance, the developmental benefits are well documented scientifically. However these benefits are now being shown to extend well beyond childhood and recently it was demonstrated that playing musical instrument in later life decreased the risks of senile dementia. Perhaps we should in these days of an aging population be encouraging the elderly to take up playing a musical instrument as much as we do children!

    Well, I can say it depend on the child gift and the commitment of who will teach them , If you really observe your child willing to learn musical instrument, Yes it's that very important for them to learn from a child age, because when as a child, their remembrance is more higher level than the bigger one they are easily to focus on what they are doing. I knew a young girl in my country, she's just 13 years old, but she is very talent in learning musical instrument, now she can play a dozen of musical instruments, her name's Bosba Ban, now she has been very famous.
    But I believe that it doesn't work out with all of child.

    I think it is very importantly.  Generally because, to learn a skill takes time and molding.  whenever doing such a thing it wll allow you no time to focus on the wrong thing or waste time.  Also by learning an instrument alone that has a lot of applications in the world and can be a great advancement in life.

    It was a family tradition that all the children took piano lessons in my family. I was five when I started to play piano but I hated it. Twice a week I had to go to piano lessons while my friends played outside. I had to practice two hours a day while my friends played outside. I finally told my parents that hated playing the piano and that it was boring.
    
    I believe that all children should be able to read music but not forced to play an instrument. In fifth grade we went to a meeting to learn about other types of instruments. I decided to play the Saxophone in the school band. To me it was more challenging then the piano and I enjoyed it.
    
    Most kids want to play the drums or the trumpet but the woodwinds I think sound nicer. Just thought I would give you a point of view of as a child. Practice instead of being outside with their friends sucks! Don't force them to learn an instrument but at least have them learn Musical Theory. Take them to a few symphonies or other instrumental concerts. Who knows you may have a new Mozart.

    Studies show children with musical instrument training have more neural activity in response to changes in pitch during speech than those without such training. An enhanced ability to detect changes in pitch might help musicians better judge emotion in speech or distinguish a statement from a question. Musically trained children have better vocabularies and reading abilities than children who don't have this musical education.

    I think that starting music at any age is great.  The earlier you begin the more time you have to develop but there are no age limit on starting.

    I do think this is immensely important ....it may spark a passion for music, requires time management , patience rhythm, small muscle coordination, and keeps their thumbs from texting if only for a short while.

    I believe that the more things that you can teach a young child will lay a foundation for them to choose their likes and wants later in life. Teaching music, art of. drawing & painting, photography helps them build up the creative side of their brains. Creativity fuels our way of life, so it is important to have a Good Natural Balance in your children abilities for further development. It has been said that music moves our souls, it's why we get goose bumps all over our skin when we hear certain, sounds, notes or instruments. To be able to read, comprehen and play different instruments helps the brain develope in other areas also, so I believe it's extremely important for the future of man/womankind.
