What are the benefits of eating dark chocolate every day? I heard this is better for you than
exercise!?
Dark chocolate has some health benefits towards your heart and some potentially other benefits that are still being studied. The reason being is because it is high in antioxidants. Of course like anything you still want to limit your intake, but dark chocolate is better than milk chocolate because it is more 'pure' from the natural form. Still nothing replaces exercise and healthy eating, but adding a little bit of dark chocolate especially when you need that sweet tooth cure will not hurt either!
They say that dark chocolate has properties that actually protect the heart. They found an island off the coast of Central America that was still very remote and basically untouched by modern civilization. Part of the daily routine was their daily drink that went along with breakfast. That drink was a very thick heavy super dark chocolate. The other thing they found was - NO Cardiovascular problems on the island that anyone could report or remember.
dark chocolate does have antioxidants, but it also lowers blood pressure. the reason dark chocolate is better is because the milk in milk chocolate prevents absorption of the beneficial compounds. the equivalent of two dark chocolate hershey kisses per day lowers BP about three points.
Simply put, the darker the better. I'd advise people who eat dark chocolate for health benefits, to avoid those with all the artificial ingredients and look for those that are 60% cacao or more.
Researchers claim that consuming dark chocolate dailly, would promote muscle growth in the same way as joggind does. This would be due to the component epicatechin; a cacao derivate.
Experiments have been conducted on mice; those were divided into three groups.
group 1 got: 2x daily a epicatechin derivate (15 days)
group 2 got: 2x daily a epicatechin derivate + had to train 1/2h on the treadmill
group 3 got: excercise only
Results shows that when you eat a small portrion of chocolate a day and combine this with regular excercise, your performance goes up with 50%
Mice from group 1 (that only had the epicatechin), performed just as well as mice that trained regulary ...
I think it's still being studied but I'm pretty sure the chemicals in chocolate are supposed to be good for the heart and increase the serotonin levels in the brain. Although exercise does the same, chocolate won't give your body the attractive physique exercise will. LOL!
I am diabetic. I can cheat easily with dark chocolate, especially ghirardelli. Low carb count and less glucose spike + health benefits, although low dosage (darn). It just satisfies the 'need' for chocolate and something sweet. Oh yeah, no artificial sweetener too.
