What do you consider the three major signs of depression?

What do you think are the three major signs of depression?  What would you do if you saw them in someone you love?

Feeling hopeless, unable to concentrate, and lack of desire or motivation to do anything --just want to be alone.

From the outside looking, not the one depressed, one would notice them sleeping a lot, or the opposite (insomnia), lack of appetite, or again the opposite (overeating), sadness, desperation, mood swings, not caring about things they once cared deeply about, noticable changes in their visual appearance...such as no longer keeping themselves up, missing a lot of work or school, not making eye contact, wanting to be alone etc..

I would begin by just showing them I loved them first by maybe spending a little time with them, talking indepth to them, looking for ways to get them to open up and talk with me without prying... see if there's anything I can do to help!

The three major signs are ...sleeping long hours, irritable ( beyond words) lacking motivation, either loss of appetite or glutony, hygiene issues.....as far as being able to help....sometimes it is beyond the average persons realm. Trained professionals have to evaluate the situation before they can even diagnose and start treatment. All anyone can do is suggest they seek help, you can't force them or make too much of an issue..It's issue a very touchy....

Withdrawal from family, friends and life.
    Less interest in appearance.
    Focus is no longer apparent.
Get them an appointment with someone to get it taken care of. Do it for them because they will have no interest in doing it for themselves. If it is required that they make the appointment, dial the phone and take them to the appointment. They will more than likely say nothing is wrong. I know, this is what happened to me. My husband finally made an appointment for me and I got help. It was simply an imbalance of chemicals in the brain and after a month or two on the pills, I was back to normal. I still take the pills though to keep the balance.
I never slept either. I would just be up wandering the house and not want to go out.

I've suffered from depression in the past.  Some major signs are:

    1) Lack of energy, or being tired all the time.
    2) Lack of motivation to do go out and do anything.
    3) Inability to enjoy those things that you use to enjoy.

These are not the only symptoms of depression, but are huge warning signs.

If you suffer from depression, all is not hopeless, despite the fact that it feels that way.  Attitude really is a state of mind, and if you focus your mind on being happy, you can actually find happiness in your day to day lives.  I know it seems somewhat stupid, but the act of wanting to be happy and making an effort to feel happy can actually have a positive influence on your life.
