Do you think your military service enhances or detracts from your writing?

I feel that my military experience has enhanced my writing. I have seen so much in my life that I have never imagined, until I joined the service. My mind set has matured leaps and bounds from when I originally joined. Don't get me wrong I'm no spring chicken but I have a lot more knowledge now then I would have just staying in my home town. Now depending on the subject asked of me or the service, will be the test. I have lost friends in the service and a son in the civilian world, there is no telling how my response would be from one day to the next. I hope I have answered your question in a way that is understandable. I know it's a bit much but in order to get to know the writer the truth should be known.

I think any experience will only enhance one's writing as long as he or she is ready to take it in their stride and work towards improving it.

I think it enhances my writing as everyone always want more, but I like to write about a lot of other subjects as well. Check me out sometime. God Bless

I have not given it a lot of thought but in doing so, I would have to say that the 6+ years that I spent in the Air Force gave me a lot more life experiences than I might have otherwise had.  I can draw from this for my writing in terms of situations, characters, etc.  I think that is the real extent of it. Some might feel that it brings a bit of self-discipline to the formula.  I would not disagree but I do not feel that is the source of my own self-discipline in terms of writing. WB

I think military experiences while many are similar, there are also unique happenings that each one experiences, even if it's the feeling the experiences invoke when in a new environment.  I personally love reading about them.  I'd have to vote for enhances the writings.

I would go along with Wayne Brown's answer and that of jmoe as well. I would also add to their answers with this: I write a lot about things that popped in front of me during my military years (14 of those) plus, I suppose that I am something of a rebellious sort and, once out of the military I let the writing cut loose. When a person is in the service, there are so very many restrictions. A person just can't wing it on their own.

Like everyone said, if you have many experiences in your life, they help you be a better writer. I am still trying.
