When doing up your home do you tend to purchase accessories or do you prefer to make your own?
Home design can be so expensive when it comes to buying all those little extra accessories, I am wondering how many people have the time to make something unique or up-cycle something that needs work.
I make my own and feel like it makes my house feel more like a home. I do buy stuff as well, but most of my decorations are homemade.
I tend to purchase my home accessories, since I am not known for handiness.
Purchase. I'm not very creative when it comes to making things, plus I just don't have the time to dedicate to it.
I tend to prefer to buy accessories, but sometimes I do like to make them as well. It depends on what it is I'm looking for and my time availability. Also, at times of shopping, a person will run across that "perfect" item that screams to be in that room.
I am not crafty so it is hard to make decorations of my own. I do like to try though. I prefer to purchase ones that I love. I have things in my home that make the home feel homey but most things aren't what I love. I like them but I don't love them. Lots of decorations and furnishings are expensive so I will only purchase items that I love and replace the other items so my home doesn't become cluttered. There is still wall hangings that need to be bought and I have to paint most rooms of my home. Then I will style it with things I love.
My Christmas ornaments are half and half.
It is very expensive to day to buy the little thing that will make your home special. I am on a budget I buy what I really need and wish that I don't have. I really don't have the time to make anything because of my busy schedule. I am not a person with the unique abilities to make and create.
I mostly buy, despite all my best intentions to get creative. Sigh....
I make my own too for the most part. There are a very few things that I buy. It gives me the ability to add personal touches to all of it, especially when it's something for the kids.
Both. There are certain things that I see that I like to buy, such as mirrors, side tables and decorative shelves that are really out of my league to make. I alos like buying figurines that match my decor.
However, I enjoy making the majority of my accessories: curtains, pillows, runners, doilies, candles, cushions, potholders, rugs, place mats, tablecloths and art prints just to name a few.
I also like to, as you say, up-cycle other items. Many of the purchased items i mentioned above are things I can find in dollar stores, thrifts stores, and yard sales. I can then repaint them to personalize them to the room.
There is an amazing variety of stuff out there that can be turned into something unique: picture frames, tables, stools, wooden chairs, vases, bowls, baskets, and so forth. It doesn't even require a lot of crafting ability; most things can be recreated simply with a can of spray paint.
Doing both is alright with me, there are good bargains at thrift stores for buying home accessories. Also making my own home accessories is a good idea as well, such as making curtains and pillows.
Hi all, thanks so much for the information, it is interesting as a concept. I love the idea of doing both but of course it does very much come down to time constraints too. I really enjoy the idea of taking something old with real history behind it and make it into something new. The big plus is having something truly unique which will be bespoke to suit my requirements without costing the earth.
