Is paying it forward (PIF) still PIF if you have to be asked to PIF for the next person in line?

A friend of mine was at Starbucks and when he ordered his drink and went to pay he was told ... its paid for ... would you like to pay for the next order? He felt he had to participate or look like a douche, it had nothing to do with doing good deeds.

I agree completely ... it cheapens an altruistic act. I would have just said no to both and walked out, I really hate being put on the spot.

We debated it some but this PIF thing seems to have grown beyond it's original intention and is almost a marketing ploy. Thanks.
